I've only owned Windows computers for the last 20 years and I've never gotten a damaging update, ever.

Users complain all the time so probably not. I've never had problems with any update.

I switched from Microsoft to Apple products some months ago with one big reason being those blasted update problems. I opted for just an iPad, not a full computer because I just don't use enough computer features to justify the expense of a Mac.

You do get updates and they sometimes can cause problems. The updates are not on a regular scheduled basis and they are just one larger update at a time which fixes or changes various aspects of your device's operating system. In other words, like Microsoft's new updates, you can't pick and choose what you want to download. However, you CAN choose when you want to download the update, it is not forced on you. Basically it's all or nothing, your choice.

And yes as I said, sometimes those updates cause people problems. If it is a widespread problem, Apple normally issues an update fix within days. So, when the word goes out that a new iOS update is out, I look around for a while to see if and what problems it may be causing. If the internet (along with this forum) is buzzing with everybody having a major problem, I simply don't download the update until Apple has issued a fix for it. Normally if I don't download updates right after they are issued, sometime within the next few weeks when I leave the device charging overnight the update gets downloaded automatically to my iPad. Then I have the option to install it, or not. By that time if there was a major problem with the original update Apple has fixed it and only automatically sends the repaired download to me. But I still have the option not to install it if I choose.

It's not perfect, but so far it's a better situation for someone like me who is technologically impaired but still needs the ability to access some basic internet and email features. I know there are many more people here that can explain this much better than I, but since those pesky updates were my bane also I thought I'd give you my limited experience and opinion. My limited knowledge two cents:

Apple devices do not get "hit" with damaging viruses, intrusions very often. (The vendor said that it's just because it would be more trouble for the intruder).

I have never had a damaging update on my Windows 7 laptop... we will need to make a decision about updating to Windows 10 when nothing will work on 7 any more.

We may go strictly iPad from this point on... I don't use my laptop if I can help it.

That's the thing if they didn't force updates on us from Microsoft I would still be on XP. I loved that OS ! but, see , they can't leave well enough alone.

Your not given or a ask U do you want windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 .

They threaten you (force you) to leave 7 and go to 10 or you will no longer get security updates and say if you don't accept , while it's free, Windows 10, later on you will have to pay for it.

Just minutes ago Windows 10 did the same update on this laptop I'm on. Absoutely nothing I could do to stop it. Thankfully, I don't keep pictures and music on this one like I do the desktop. So, far , I haven't detected any difference. I held my breath. So, far, so good.

I don't like feeling I'm being held hostage to the whims of MS. I like control of my own household gadgets. I paid for them not MS and it looks like I'm gonna have to keep paying for their c*appy downloads

until I figure out a way for me to get away from them.

There were helpful posts on the electronics forum that had us all installing a "roadblock" on laptops last summer to halt MS mandatory take-over.

I always get answers to my questions there.

The problem with that is that it really only stopped Windows 10 from your machine. As far as the updates, Microsoft has also changed the way it sends updates to you for Windows 7 (and 8 too I'm presuming). Although I do believe that you can retain some control even under the new method.

I actually would love it if somebody else just did all that work for me without me having to schedule it or think about it. Just do it efficiently!

I owned Windows computers from 1995 until 2014 and never had a damaging update. I also never had a problem I couldn't fix. I'm not sure what you mean by your notebook was large and couldn't be fixed. Are you talking about the app/program notepad?

If you don't use many of a computer's features, why not buy an iPad and use it? It's easy to use, doesn't get viruses and is easy to restore if you do mess up.

Every sorftware company chooses to eventually not longer support old versions of it's product. That's just the way it is.

Having said that, you couldn't pay me to go back to Windows.
