IPad with no electricity

This message was posted on a friend's FB page before Matthew hit. Can anyone verify if it is true?

"I can send messages on the tablet. I just can't receive them with no internet."

I thought you needed the internet to send and receive. TIA

i have an ipad model that has cell service (3G4G model) so assuming my battery is charged i have internet (and the towers arent down) and can send and receive email and FB messages and Text Messages. (but even if you dont have a cell model you can send and receive Text messaging over WIFI which would require electricity). Assuming my phone has juice also my ipad will receive text messages and phone calls (and you can make calls to your contacts also even if cell service turned off because the calls are going thru your turned on phone via WIFI i think. This is called Continuity a feature first unveiled I beleive in IOS 8 i beleive). I only turn on my cell service on my ipad when either my electricity is out, my internet service is down or i am somewhere that doesnt have wifi. So i think the answer to the OPs question is yes, with Continuity and the right IOS your ipad can receive texts and phone calls if your phone is on. But if you dont have electricity you need a Cell Model Ipad because otherwise the calls/texts would need wifi.

If you pay for 3G/4G/LTE service you can get messages if you only have a WIFI capable Ipad then no you can not. You would need to find a hot spot somewhere that has service.

@Zhills- it depends on your iPad model....if you connect by wifi only....you will have an issue but I don't think you can send or receive messages if wifi is down. If your iPad works with lte and wifi, providing phone lines are ok, messages can be sent and received...so probably an issue with phones?

Don't you need WiFi to RECEIVE if you need WiFi to SEND a text???

Yes you do. But if you have an ipad model with Cell service like i do, you can do everything over your cell service when you dont have Wifi.

Agree with Shawnie. I can also use my phone as a wifi hotspot, so that would work as well.

I am going to have to try that. I really had to think to answer OPs question. I set it all up a couple of years ago and just dont even think about it now. It is convenient not to have to reach for cell phone when a call comes in and i am playing on the ipad.

You'd only need electricity/hotspot if you were downloading a book or app. :^)
