Buying any computer from a 3rd party is never a good idea. Good to, or call a company directly, and buy it from them. I have always had a computer built with exactly the hardware I feel is the best at that particular time.

I have never bought the cheapest or cheaper models because I want them to meet any demands I make of it, at any time. I also want ton future proof, as much as possible, so it is not a relic in a few years.

I pay less for a computer built with my specifications that can function at it's best with all of my types of needs and/or enjoyment. Any time you involve a 3rd party and have an issue with that computer, you can get caught in the old phrase, a"Catch 22". You call the business from which you bought it. They tell you "you have to call the manufacturer. They in turn tell you, no, that is the responsibily of the business from which you made the purchase".

And round and round you go. My direct from the manufacturer? There is no 3rd party involved and should a problem arise? It is not a "pass the buck game", with you the one being "the buck being tossed" back and forth.

Been saying this here for years, and I see no reason to think any differently now. What I do see by buying from the manufacturer now? The ability to nogotiate for a better price because computers are no longer the one and only device to do accomplish certain things. You need look no further than the sales of tablets and smart phones.

hckynut(john)

I would ALWAYS buy a computer from the manufacturers' websites. You're sure of getting the most up to date technology and operating system. Also, I would NEVER use one of these 3rd party technical support companies. As far as i know, all computer companies offer extended service and support contracts that they back and that allow you to use their tech reps when needed.

We are a Mac family. We always purchase our computers and iPads either through the Apple website or from an Apple Retail Store. We also always purchase Apple Care as part of the package to give us extended acces to Apple's tech support people.

Never ever buy from a shopping channel such as QVC or HSN older models and software you will get with the computer that you will never need or use. We have three HP's which we brought from the HP store online. No problems and we like them very much.

Apparently you have to renew a subscription each year to continue using it. If you go to the Microsoft Office website, you'll get the information. There are versions of Office where you buy it once. There are also free downloads of software that is equivalent to Office and there is no charge. I would be loathe to pay for Office every year.

I have an iMac. It came with Apple's version of software equivalent to Office (called Pages, Keynote, and Numbers). There was no charge. On my previous iMac, I had the older versions and they worked just fine. One benefit of what I have is that it will automatically convert an Office document I receive to the appropriate Mac equivalent. Unfortunately, I still have to prepare a "Windows" version of something I'm sending to a PC user.

They must make a lot of money selling this 'annual subscription' version of Word/Office.

Geez, you can buy a copy for a small amount of money (well under $100 last I saw) and it's good for three computers - no renewal, just a permanent copy.
