Windows 10 and Automatic Microsoft updates

I have an HP Computer with Windows 7. When all the talk about Windows 10 was going on, I didn't want to have windows auotmatically install it on my HP. To avoid that, I changed my auotmatic updates to an option where I could choose what updates I wanted to install.

That meant I had to check from time to time and install updates unrelated to Windows 10 which I did with no problem until today. When I went in to look for updates today, I clicked check for updates. The wheel just spins and spins. No messages and this is hours later. If I try to click it again, it says Checking for Updates and nothing happens.

If I go back to auotmatic updates, am I still at risk of having 10 installed? My plan is to buy a Mac next computer when my windows 7 dies.

I would call Staples or the Best Buy Geeks. Both places sell HP and can probably answer your questions. If in doubt, call both places and compare information given.

I don't have the answer, but I'm glad you asked this.

I refuse to download "10", & have only recently startied getting update notices again from Microsoft. Since they won't let you see the update info in detail, I haven't updated. I figure they'll sneek in a 10 download.

Why wait? It might help with the transition to have a Windows computer to use while you learn the Apple operating system.

@glb613, is it why wait for the Apple computer? If so, I understand they are updating them next year. I am not in a hurry to have a new computer. I use my ipad more than my computer. When my HP dies or becomes too much of a problem, I will make the switch. LM

PS, I just read an article that says Microsoft claims not to be forcing Windows 10 on people. Only problem is they seem to be the only ones who have that view. If I thought I could just go back to auto updates without worrying about Windows 10, I would.

I was receiving those download messages on my Windows 7 and did not want to download the 10. If I remember correctly there was a deadline given where they told me there would be no more upgrades for my W7. Last April my mother board crashed and I was forced to get a new computer. I now have the Windows 10 and I am still learning it. I need to find someplace that offers classes because the computer people I know can not help me. It has so much more than I need or will ever use. I would like to take many things to an out of the way place out of sight but have been told that can't be done. Guess I have look at the extra garbage everytime I log in. I regularly get upgraded on the W10 overnight. I now have an inexpensive tablet and use that for simple things but I use Office all the time for the house.

Hello Lillismom,

get the the phone number for Microsoft from Microsoft.com and call them. That's where you'll get your answer.

1. Turn your computer completely off. Then turn back on.

If that doesn't work

2. And you do not want to call Microsoft, let's say or let's say you think your computer maybe infected with a virus.

I don't know I'm not there to see what exactly is going on. It's not clear to me what the problem is.....but I do know quite a bit on how to work an HP computer. Especially with Windows 7.

3. Why don't you just remove Windows 10 and reinstall it. If your having that much trouble that's what I would do.

Im soo sorry, geeez if I was there I'd love to help you out. I love working on HPs" I've spent a lot of time self taught and learned a lot.

The last resort, do a recovery.........".

@Lilysmom Windows 10 is no longer free. I doubt you would get anything from them. However a tech at Staples told me that Micrrosoft is stopping all updates at the end of the year, except for Windows 10. THey want everyone off the others. It is over 100.00 now.

The last couple of days I've gotten updates on a Win8.1 computer that I've been using, for the 'compatibility for Win10' type of thing. I guess they are still doing those in case people still want to upgrade their OS.

But I still put them on 'ignore' when I catch them. I accidentally installed the one yesterday but it doesn't seem to affect anything. I still have the GPX Panel installed on my 8.1 & 7 computers.

The weird thing is that I can no longer find a way to uninstall a given update. I wanted to uninstall that one that I let through and it used to be that you could right-click on one and uninstall it. Sneaky, they are, trying to force stuff on you.

I do have one that is Win10 (new OEM OS) and they just take away more and more user control. With that OS you can no longer pick and choose updates. ugh

The period for free upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 ended 7/29. So I don't think you'd risk getting Win 10 by choosing automatic updates.

Microsoft will continue providing security updates for Win 7 through 1/14/2020, more than three years hence. But there will be no more non-security updates. (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2475079,00.asp)

I'd set your computer to automatic updates. On the odd chance you get Win 10, it's not all bad. Actually it's pretty good, just a few new things to learn. I've had it since July.

I wonder why the guy at Staples told me no more updates for Windows anything other then 10 by the end of the year? I think it is terrible how they shove these new programs at us. I updated in July and at first I hated it, but now I love it.. You just have to get used to it.

I've heard some saying this when, in reality Win7 is supported for security updates until the year 2020 and Win8.1 until the year 2023.

Obviously, though, they are pushing to get everybody to Win10. I would never upgrade an OS on an existing computer. But I did get curious enough that I purchased a new one with Win10.

After I tweaked it a lot I don't hate it except that it messes with some of my programs AND it gives you a LOT less control. I think that's kind of wrong. When you buy the OEM licene, you should be able to have some control, outside of that which could compromise the OS and the hardware.

@chickenbutt I am not a big fan of the privacy rules in Window 10. ...But I do like the automatic updates. This gives customers no choice.

@Yesyesyes568, thanks for taking the time to write here. I don't have Windows 10. I was worried it would update automatically. If, as @BalletBabe says, it is no longer free I shouldn't have to worry about it. I will just turn the automatic updates back on. LM

I would rather start fresh with a new computer with Windows 10 or buy a Mac. I am in the buy a Mac category. Everything else I own is Apple and I am tired of the Windows issues.

I am going to turn the automatic updates back on. If it causes me any grief, I will just buy a Mac earlier than planned. I appreciate your feedback. LM

Turned on the computer, clicked settings to automatic updates then clicked to view waiting updates and, yes, there was Windows 10 in the lineup. It was number 5 of the updates and said it was reserved for me. OMG isn't that just the worst?

Shutdown the computer before it installed and I am mad as a hatter. This must be very damaging for their business. All I want to do is run to Apple. LM
