HP Strange Occurence

Has anyone had a problem with the new 17" HP laptop?! we received ours on 8/26 and the HP assistant messaged that the Bios needed to be updated. Proceeded with the update and nothing.

Decided to do the update through the HP website and I received a message that stated that the two machines we bought from QVC, were both tretired and support was not available for them. So, no Bios update.

Was just wondering if any else had similar incidents?!

@glb613 Thanks for posting. I received my tsv HP laptop, but didn't set it up right away until after I read this posters thread. I had no trouble setting it up and I didn't get that message she received.

As a general rule a BIOS (Basic Input Output System) shouldn't need updating unless you've upgraded to a better CPU or faster memory. (Before 1995 you couldn't easily update a BIOS, then with the invention of EEPROM memory it became more practical.) The BIOS that comes included with every motherboard should be compatible with any and all CPU's/devices that were available at that time. In twenty plus years of computing, including assembling computers from components, I've never had to update the BIOS. Now if you're using a two or three year old motherboard/BIOS and combining it with a brand new CPU/memory that uses somewhat different technology than the old BIOS was designed for, it would need updating, but any commercially sold computer should have an up to date BIOS for the hardware that's included.

On June 14, 2016 HP announced a worldwide voluntary recall and replacement program in cooperation with various government regulatory agencies for certain notebook computer batteries that were shipped with specific HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion Notebook Computers sold worldwide from March 2013 through August 2015 and/or were sold as accessories or spares, or provided as replacements through Support. The affected batteries have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers.

What to do

If the validation process indicates that your battery is affected, cease use of the battery immediately and remove it from the notebook. HP will provide a replacement battery for each verified, affected battery, at no cost.

@gardenman - My 2 year old HP laptop (purchased via Costco, and Win 10 OS) just had a BIOS update alert last week. I did do the install. There was nothing other than Win 10 updates that had ever been added.

Up until last week I think I'd only done one BIOS update in 20 years and through several computers.

BIOS updates aren't done commonly simply because if something goes wrong, you're in big trouble. Many/most motherboards now come with dual BIOS chips so you always have one functional BIOS on the computer which is smart. In the not too distant past if you tried to update a BIOS and it went badly the motherboard would have to have a new BIOS chip installed. With a dual BIOS setup you can mess up badly on one and still have a functional BIOS on the other. Without a functional BIOS your computer becomes a paperweight, so it's something to be cautious playing around with..

Oh yeah @gardenman - once upon a time I did computer support and I know BIOS updates could be dicey!

I have not heard of dual BIOS and no idea if my laptop has that. Good info.

The thing that caught my attention in this post was the "retired product" message.
I also purchased the HP Laptop as the TSV, and received mine on 8/22/16.
I registered the product and wanted to check out the support site in general.
I'm a little concerned about the noise being generated from (I believe) the
hard drive so I wanted to see if there were any driver updates. To do that
I needed to list the model number. I did not find it so I chose the option
to let HP find it. That is when I also received the "retired product" message.
I've spent over two hours on live chat to find out this: The laptop will not
be officially launched until 9/3/16, at which time the database for this model
will be available. Hope this info is helpful.

It's surprising how often a company will fail to update their website for new products. I bought something a year or so ago and couldn't register it for several weeks as the manufacturer hadn't updated their website with the new item yet. They were selling it, telling people to register it on their site, only to not have it listed on their site so you couldn't register it.
