NEW LAPTOP BATTERY

I just purchased a new laptop battery for my Dell. It's a 9 cell. I've been using it for about 2 weeks and only get 2 hours from the battery. Today I left it go down to 20% and then pluged it in and closed the notebook. My battery meter said the battery will take 169 minutes to get to 100%. i checked the battery function and it said it's normal. Should i have expected more time on a new battery that cost $90.? I can send it back for a refund. I thought for 2 hours I could of purchased a cheap battery for $25. I'm sure my original 9 cell Dell lasted 4 to 5 hours when new. I followed the instructions that came with the battery and did just as they said. Got it from a reputable online seller with a lot of good reviews. Has a 2 year warranty too.

A 9 cell should get more than 2 hours. I'd send it back and buy new. Multi-tasking or having lots of programs running at the same time will depleat your battery sooner. I'd suggest you minimize the number of open programs when on bettery power. You can further extend your battery life by not having the brightness set at 100%.

It's good timing you posted this. My son called me yesterday and he has a HP 17' computer only a few months old. He used just the battery (has a 4 cell battery) and got 2 1/2 hours. It listed 5 hours on the battery. I told him the next time I visit I will see what he runs while using it. The more things you close help as glb613 said. It is good to run the battery way down when you first get the laptop to be sure it is charging correctly. I run mine on power 6 days a week and then run it on battery once a week and let it go doen and recharge it.I have a Toshiba 15" laptop 4 years old. I also never get more than 2 1/2 hours on my laptop and never have. I would think a 9 cell battery would get at least 5 hours. My son is new to a laptop as his desktop died. You can also turn the brightness down and save battery life.

That seems like an inordinately long time to recharge a battery, @kismet . How old is your AC Adapter? I'd suggest that before returning the battery you check that first, and I see @Nuttmeg has already provided a link for you. Good luck with it. I know AC Adapters do go. I've had to replace one here. I bought a new adapter too. Mine has seen better days so i just decided to get both.

I got a return email from the company explaining the problem and they said to run the battery down to 0 and then charge it and that would calibrate the battery. I did that tonight and stayed off the computer the whole time and it took over 3 hours to charge. I checked the charge when I pulled the adapter and it said 1hr 58 min. The company also said they would replace the battery if it's not working correctly but to be honest I wonder if another would be better. I only have 30 days to return it. If I return the battery I'll return the adapter too. My old adapter still works so I can use that and buy a battery elsewhere. Its frustrating when things don't work as they should. For $90. I expect better.

I can't help wondering if the old A/C adapter is not adequate for the new, 9cell, battery. Could there be something in that?

The battery that came with my computer is a 9cell so I got the new 9cell and an adapter to match what I had. My computer says the battery is working normally so I would assume this battery does not have any higher battery time. I did call the company today and left a message that I would like the RMA on both of these items and I also emailed back to them that I don't want a replacement and am sending both back. Their policy is a 30 day return so as soon as I get it I'll send it out. Question is I find this battery not what a 9cell should be so who pays the return shipping.

Just decided to get a Dell battery and hopefully it will give me more time. My husband and I have the same computer and I've used mine a lot more than he has. I checked his battery and he still has 2 hours on his.

Hopefully this return will go smoothly.

IMO, @kismet , if I sunk $90 big ones on a battery, I'd want to see some improvement, for sure.

There's so much that goes into determining how much you can expect to realize; i.e., your particular configuration and its power requirements, what you'd be doing on the laptop, the size of your screen, etc.

Good luck with your return. Sounds like the right decision to me. I've always found that battery times are inflated.

Hi again, Kismet! Well, darn! I thought I had it figured out. I'd go back to my initial theory in that you tend to get less from generic brand batteries so, fingers crossed that the Dell brand one works as it should.

My first laptop was a Dell that came with a 9cell battery and it gave quite a lot of time. I use mine 99% of the time plugged in and only run them on battery about once a month to run the battery down now and then.

But my Dell battery did die after a few years and I just never replaced it. It ended up off my network anyway because it has XP and it couldn't run online with the higher security that I went to when I replaced my first router.

I called the company this morning as soon as they opened. Realized that no company seems to open when they say. So called a little later and spoke to someone. Was told they would send me another battery and would pay for return postage for this one if they sent me another battery. I told them I didn't want another battery and they said I could send this one back for a refund but I would have to pay the postage. I said the battery is defective but they said they won't pay cause they have to recoup the cost. So I'll send it back, pay for it and then leave a review which I feel is fair.

I was on the phone with the guy and I got disconnected. So I called back and was speaking to the same guy and got disconnected again. I called back and it said to leave a message, I said between the battery being defective and two disconnected calls I've had enough and I'll send it out.

I did go on the battery meter on my computer and it said the battery is working normally so I would assume that the battery was only capable of keeping a charge for 2 hours. When I find another battery I'm going to ask how many hours I can expect on the battery before I buy it. Wondering if others have had the same problem.

I am sending both of them back. Figured I would just get an adapter from Dell. The adapter I got has a smaller opening where it plugs into my computer and while it works it falls out when I move the notebook. I have been using my old one that still works. The other one has been boxed up. Didn't consider that when I got it. Now I know to ask before I buy.
