Glad you got your things copied.

I'd have to say that the most practical way is to copy these files onto an external hard drive and then take them from there to copy onto the new computer.

Is that the fastest? Nope! But it won't take long at all and the BIG reason for doing it that way is that you should always have at least one external copy of all your treasured files (photos, docs, etc).

I bought a 128gb USB by SanDisk that Best Buy had for $19.99 on special last week. I put over 5000 photos on it yesterday that were on my computer hard drive and it still has 120 gb left. I bought 2 when I ordered them. I like the USB drive as you can plug it in anywhere and take it with you.

I just back up my iPads up to iTunes and then go to My Computer and right click on my iPad icon and transfer the photos on the iPad to my USB thumb drive. I also put a copy on a disc of important ones. All our photos are on our computers and not printed out. I want to be sure my kids and grandchildren have photo memories to pass on.

I also use Dropbox Free but it fills up quickly. It is as easy as Google to save them in also.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I plugged iPad into computer which recognized it as a hard drive. I went into files, copied them to desktop and dragged them into my pictures file on the computer. 5000+ photos in about a half hour.

Now I must back my computer up to an external source. I have one but haven't used it for awhile. I am sure there is newer technology.

@MKR14, your solution sounds interesting. I wonder what else is out there vis a vis newer technology to do this. My external drive is probably five years old now and I am guessing there is better ethnology out there today.

Before I do that, I should cull the photos. I have too many! I print the ones I really want to keep of special events like graduations and family photos. LM

Do you keep your photos in folders? What I mean is, for example, I take a lot of pics (2-3,000 a year) and have like a folder that is 'BirdPics2016', etc, and folders for other categories.

So, when I go to move pics to back up, or to put on an additional computer, I just move the whole folder at once. It takes some minutes to get each one, but you are moving a bunch at a time so, collectively, it takes a lot less time than moving each pic individually.

Hi again!

My current favorite external hard drive is a Toshiba 1tb. I got it on Amazon - This one -

This is more space than I'll probably EVER need and I have tens of thousands of pictures, plenty of docs, recipes, etc.

I paid $61 for it, so it's several dollars less now. It's USB 3.0, so it's current. I've had it for over a year and have no complaints.

I also have several flash drives of different manufacturers. I like them but people worry about reliability so anything I put on any of them I also put on a hard drive too.

Hi Loves! Those online storage sites seem popular. I'm probably just an oldie, as usual, in that I prefer to store my own stuff.

Sure, a hard drive could go bad although I haven't had that happen, but an online storage place could lose your things and you'd have no control over that.

@Lilysmom One thing I have to learn to do when saving my photos is to name them as I add them. I spend an hour naming some of the photos and will do the rest someday. When you put so many over to the USB the File Name didn't copy but all the photos in it did. I always put them on a DVD but I like the idea of the USB drive as it is more portable as not everyone has a DVD on their computer. That is if taking them to someone else's house to share them. The larger USB's seem to be coming down in price. They are so easy to use. Glad I helped in a small way. Good people are here on the Electronic Forum.

We had notice it was ending and I got a copy of everything I had stored. Why didn't you get your photos before you retired?

I'm too cheap to pay for cloud storage. I have multiple external hard drives and also burned photos on DVDs. I really need to take copies to my safe deposit box for storage. The point I'm making is, you have options. The only option you should choose is to not make copies of the photos you can't afford to lose. Good luck with whatever you select.

Thanks to all for their comments. This is such a great forum. People are so helpful and the input is sincerely appreciated. I have never asked a question here that I did not find a solution for.

For those photos that I really want, those with loved ones and special occasions, I have printed those. Most of my photos are garden ones. Nice but no big deal if I lose them. I usually print photos of big yard jobs so we can remember the jobs.

Hoping @dooBdoo is around to comment as well. LM
