I have another month for the free upgrade to decide if I want to upgrade. I have heard many horror stories of people doing it and trying to go back to 7 and then some people have no problems at all. I have 8gb RAM and 1tb of storage so I know that part is OK. I pulled up a tutorial on Windows 10 on you tube and I can live with the changes. I just want an easy transition with no problems. Will my anti virus transfer over? I take it I will have to reconfigure my printer and computer speakers as well. Also have any of you using the new microsoft edge browser? If so, do you like it? Is it better than Google Chrome? Had no problems with Google Chrome.

Thank you for you help!

The deadline for the free upgrade is July 29th. No word yet on how much it will be after that. I love Windows 7 as well but I do want to upgrade but want it to be a smooth transition. Like I said I went on you tube and looked at a tutorial on Windows 10 and for me I can deal with it. Going to have to transition to it someday. It is not as bad as Windows 8 was.

I had Windows 7 so am familiar with it, but upgraded to Windows 10 on my 2-year-old HP laptop with Windows 8.1. I love it. Not a single problem or issue so far. But I had all the necessary prep downloads done and my computer was ready.

You can use some of the new things, like Edge browser (I stuck with Chrome) or be basic with it and it is fine. I tried "Cortana" and speech recognition but it couldn't begin to compare to my smart phone in "getting it right." So I'll just type in my questions there, but it is handy for quick news/weather updates, right on your task bar.

I know I too had heard horror stories, but all went perfectly for me with the download and install. It is so easy to use, everything is there, my desktop picture was right where it was, all my icons, programs, passwords, pictures, files, music, etc.

I had to make a few choices (default browser, homepage, etc.) but took minutes, very easy and smooth. Just make sure you have uninterrupted time to keep an eye on it and then set it up. I did it late at night, no distractions, and watched tv while it was perking away.

One of my favorite things are the glorious photos that appear (mostly landscapes, nature) when you wake it up from sleep mode. They always brighten my day.

I'm sure you'll get horror stories and warnings as it is Microsoft and there always are those, so take it all into account and then make your decision, and good luck!

I downloaded 10 and it was the worst thing that I could do for my computer. I had so many problems that I deleted it and went back to 8.

I know people who have purchased new computers with 10 installed and they are very happy. I personally think that would be the way to go. Wait until you decide on a new computer or let a professional install it. Just my 2 cents.

I just upgraded my Acer Windows 7 laptop last Thursday 6-24-16 and everything went well. Then two days later I helped a friend update her Windows 8.1 Desktop and everything went well for her also. My upgrade took 9 ½ hours to complete on the laptop. My friend’s upgrade took 4 ½ hours on the desktop.

I did have to manually install a driver for my old HP printer, but my friend’s printer is always connected to her desktop and she did not have to manually reinstall a driver for her Lexmark printer.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that my Firefox browser came back the exact same as before the upgrade. All favorites, bookmarks etc were just as they were on my Windows 7 laptop. On my friend’s Desktop, her Firefox and Google Chrome browsers uploaded beautifully too. As for Microsoft Edge browser, I haven’t played around it with much yet, but it seems to be pretty intuitive.

Both of our antivirus programs transferred properly and you do not have to turn your antivirus program “off” before downloading Windows 10. Just leave it on.

My computer speakers are working the same as they did before the upgrade and I assume that my friend’s speakers are working too. Haven’t thought to ask her about that, but I think she would have noticed by now if they weren’t working.

One important thing that I would like to point out is that after Windows 10 installs I looked and found that the “System Restore” function was turned “off” by default so you will want to get that turned back on asap because Windows will not turn it on for you.

Another thing, I don’t have iTunes and other music stored on my computer, but it is my understanding that there could be a problem with iTunes and Windows 10. Look into this if iTunes is important to you.

More importantly, if you have a Canon Printer, chances are that it will not work with a Windows 10 computer. Canon announced months ago that they were NOT going to update a driver for Canon printers to Windows10. Maybe they changed their mind—but don’t count on it.

All in all, I think Microsoft did a very good job on the upgrade on my laptop and on my friend’s desktop. Just be very patient while it is upgrading—don’t freak out if the upgrade appears to be stuck at 99%--mine looked stuck for a couple hours, but my friend’s Desktop upgrade did not appear to get stuck at all. And after the upgrade is complete, please leave your computer “on” for at least a couple hours so that the computer can finish doing things in the background. You will still want to change some settings on your own later, and maybe get rid of some of the unnecessary programs that come along with the Windows 10 upgrade. Good luck!!

Beauty, if I were you I would call the Canon Company customer servicer number to inquire directly with Canon whether your exact printer model will get the proper driver after the Windows 10 upgrade. If your printer is newer, perhaps it will have the proper driver!!

Canon MAY have since changed their mind and went ahead to create a driver that works with older Canon printers and Windows 10. No use going through the time to upgrade only to find that your printer won't work though.

The other thing to consider if you're curious, @beautywithin , is that as long as you back up before installing Windows 10, you have the option to uninstall it from the Start menu of Win 10 within 30 days, if for some reason it doesn't work for you. I don't know what your antivirus is, but normally you would not need to uninstall it prior to the upgrade. You might want to Google to see if perhaps Canon may have changed its stance. As far as Windows 7 being available for awhile...Yes, Microsoft will be supporting it until January 2020. HTH's

My anti virus is Webroot too and I spoke to customer service directly and was told to uninstall it and the reinstall after the transition! I just checked and with my Canon printer they don't have the driver for it but it says the driver for 7 or 8 should be able to work. What???? I think this is telling me not to do this and to wait when I get a new computer in the next 4 years with Windows 10 on it and to do it just before Windows 7 will not be supported. Thanks for all your help!

Nutmeg I just clicked on that link and my Canon printer is not listed on there. I got it less then 2 years ago and it is a great printer. I think I will stick to Windows 7.

It all depends on your computer. I upgraded two laptops from 7 to 10. I persoanlly had no problems. My Cannon printer does not work, BUT it is also 7 years old. I wanted a air printer anyway so , I purchased a HP from QVC that I just love! I have a friend that upgraded and her computer crashed. Cost her almost 100.00 to get it fixed. She bought her computer at Walmart. (Walmart uses old graphic cards and I think that is the problem) My laptops came from Staples and QVC and I had no issues. I purchased one from QVC two years ago and Staples one is 4 years old. Hope this helps!

O/P: Take a look at two other recent threads: 'Computer lock-up virus' thread and the other 'Forced Windows 10 update' thread. A few interesting bits of information to ponder.......
