Computer lock up virus message

Looks like I picked up malware or something. The message wants me to call an 800 number. I know it's a scam, butI don't know how to get rid of it. I'm running Malwarebytes on it now. Any suggestions?

Shut down your computer. Force a shutdown if necessary. Do not answer or call anyone. If you can't get it to shut down. TURN IT OFF

Hold down your power button until the computer shuts down. When you reboot it run your antivirus and things should be fine. It is a scam and the only way I got out of it was to do this.

I got the same message this morning!! Never saw it before, but my husband has--he told me it's a scam---he closed the page and reopened it--the message was gone. Now I'll know what it is if it appears again.

I rebooted and it is still on my Microsoft Edge browser. I can use another browser, but I would sure like to know how to get rid of it.

Wait at least 20 seconds before you turn it back on. don't just restart!

The computer should reset in that time.

Did you restart or do a complete shutdown? A restart doesn't always get rid of ever

ything but a complete shutdown should. A computer shop told me that and it works for me. It is always a good thing to do a complete shutdown on your phones and computer once a week if you leave them on all the time.

This happened to a friend of ours. We happened to be over at their place and unfortunately, she had already called the number and was talking to a person who demanded payment for some type of virus removal. My husband works in IT Security and luckily, he intervened, taking over the phone call and while he was listening to the guy blab, he saw at the same time the guy remotely trying to look through files on her computer. My husband immediately yanked out the network cable from her PC so it totally cut off all network connection. The guy was like, "Oh, seems I can't get further, something happened" and my husband was like, "Yea, I ended your little scam!" and then hung up. He then examined their entire PC and did some scans, etc., and luckily, it didn't look like the person took anything nor did they install anything worse.

All she was doing was looking for some random clipart to use for a project and she happened to click on the wrong image file.

Fortunately I knew it was a scam. I just didn't know how to get rid of it. Still not sure it will be gone after I run Malwarebytes and reboot again.

You should find yourself another browser, like FireFox or Chrome.

I use a malware scanner everyday at a set time. It is a paid program like real time Malwarebytes. You may want to buy.

You should go to the site of your security software and use the free scanner. This may take some time.

You may want to use an adblock extension with a browser. They work with all browsers. I did not know about MSE.

That happened to me and no matter what I did I could not get rid of it. I had to call comcast and they fixed it for me.

Clear your browser and shut your computer down and wait for at least 5 minutes before you re-boot.

So far, Malwarebytes has detected 22 objects. I am using Windows Defender as well. I have Firefox and Chrome. I was trying to go to you tube and mis-typed it leaving off the y. That is when the warning popped up. Imagine how many potential ""scam victims" they get!

Window Defender is not a very strong program. It will shut down when you install another Anti-virus program. You may want to use free Avast http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

Windows Defender is the built-in program. I just ordered the Premium Malwarebytes. Hope that helps!

I'm thinking of starting a new thread, telling folks that if they don't hear from me it's because I'm going to shut down and cancel my provider and MS. Can't get into my email because it says that my password doesn't match. Tried several times. It's been slow ever since MS loaded W10 without my permission. (I X'd the red box out). Somewhere I saw on one of the stations a Google-powered something (a tablet? or computer?), which I might buy instead of hours of trying to access my emails and get my home page back. Froze up, too, so I couldn't click onto anything at one point. I shut down my laptop all day long, and feel good about doing that. If other people in the country just shut down, 'they'll lose money on advertising and kickbacks related to clicking onto various links, etc. Hopefully 'they' will straighten it all out. Rather conspiracy sounding, I know. But several friends have tried to straighten this out for me, and they are puzzled, to say the least. I'm guessing that an employee 'over there' allegedly read my private email to a friend regarding MS, and he's 'paying me back' in a very childish way, lol. All in all, we do have to be careful what we write and say. And it's probably rogue employees doing all of the spying. JMO p.s. Any 'rogue' employee can do anything they want to do. Our info is out there everywhere. Not everyone follows company rules, if there are any now-a-days. Just a few clicks here and there.......

This email password request is one of many problems that can occur when Win 10 downloads to an existing configuration. Before you go through any more aggravation with the email, why don't you install the GWX Control Panel program? It will get rid off all the downloaded Windows 10 files for you and block them automatically going forward. Once it deletes the Win 10 files downloaded to your computer your email should be fine.

Here are the directions:

If you "Google" GWX Control Panel, it will present you with the link to the program/app. and all the pertinent info and options for your current version of Windows. The site where GWX Control Panel originates is Ultimate Outsider. That's where I downloaded from and I suggest you use it. I recommend that you use the Installer.

Thanks, GoKat. If I feel good enough tomorrow morning, I just might give it a try. Right now, it's late, I'm tired. I'll feel fresher in the morning! I'm not crazy about my provider to begin with, but W10/MS is even worse. Have a nice July 4th, and wishing our country and everyone here a peaceful, stress-free life. Our country's forefathers wouldn't believe all of this complicated gadget stress, and that's for sure. And they probably wouldn't believe that a company would over-ride customers' wishes. (It all starts on a small scale, and then eventually spreads to all sorts of industries.) As I've said before, people will be sitting in their automatically driven cars, and they'll end up at a destination where the car company wants them to be. Wherever 'they' decide is a better destination. 'Mark my words'............
