Let me just state I am not tech savvy at all. Anyway I have Windows 7, I haven't updated to Windows 10. On Saturday I was doing Windows update to see if there were important updates I needed to download and install. I don't know if I accidentally clicked the Windows 10 update or it just started on it's own. I cancelled it and in the history of updates it shows cancelled. Since then I am having trouble. It will look for updates for eons without ever showing any. When I have gotten the message of important updates they won't download. I tried looking on Microsoft's website and used the Mr. Fixit(I think that's what's it called) and it didn't work. If someone can help me (dumb it down for me) I will be forever grateful!

I have Windows 7 but plan to install 10 before the free period ends next month. Microsoft is pushing hard for everyone to switch to 10. Your problems may be your "punishment" from MS for cancelling the update? I don't know, but your solution may be to embrace 10.

@Jordan2 There are a lot of tech savy people on here who can help you but I just want to say I understand your 'pain'. I used to be like you and couldn't do any of it. I THOUGHT I couldn't do any of it but I discovered mostly it was because I was nervous to try it.

That's the key word Jordan, to TRY it. I turn 70 years old this year! My late husband owned a computer company. Yet I wasn't interested in any of it, too complicated. He made it easy for me to do all of it.

My grandchildren are extremely tech savy and what I can't figure out, they help me. So does my son-in-law. He owns a cyber security computer business so whatever I need he can get at reasonable prices.

But here's my reason for posting to you (as one tech 'illiterate' to another). JUST TRY IT! It's really hard to break a computer.

My friends ask me all of the time, "Annabelle, you have so many 'gadgets'. How do you know how to connect them together and to the internet". I say, (holding up my hand, (index finger sticking up in the hair) "You see this index finger"? They say, "Yes, of course". I say, "I take this finger and touch the buttons, just push the buttons". First I go on the internet and google exactly what I want to know and then I click on YouTube usually because I can't understand directions (I'm a VISUAL person, seeing I can do).

Sometimes I get so mixed up, so frustrated, I feel like I'm going crazy! But my son-in-law taught me that if you hold down the OFF button for a few seconds it RESETS the computer (I'm talking Ipads, don't know about laptops but I assume the same) it will reset back to the original way it was before you started clicking buttons.

Then you can start again! If I can do it you can do it, believe me.

You're 'talking' to a person who gets lost leaving a high rise building. If you can go the wrong way.....I'll go the wrong way.

I would say to go ahead and download windows 10. My son-in-law (sorry to keep referring to him, but he's my teacher) also said whenever something first comes out, don't download it, wait until the flub ups have been fixed by the company. However, he said it's been out long enough they've pretty much been fixed so it's OK to download it.

I recently went ahead and downloaded Windows 10. I have 2 IPADS, 1 mini IPAD, 1 laptop, 1 IPHONE6 and a few other things. I'm not bragging, I'm telling you this so you know so far I haven't broken any of them, HA!

Oh! Not to scare you but to tell you how stupid I am. About 2 months ago on my old IPAD3 I couldn't remember the 'secret' word. I kept trying to punch it in and eventually the entire screen went blank (like what happened with Apple and the government on that terrorists cell phone).

There was no way to get in it as I tried every suggestion on the internet, etc. It was dead and I was too lazy to take it to the Apple store as I was told they were the only one's to fix it.

I gave it to (you know who, son-in-law) and it took some time but he got it 'back' and now it's as good as new.

So, again, don't be afraid to try different things. You go for it. I think it's great that you are doing it in the first place. I have friends (my age) who won't touch a computer.

Sorry to go on and on but I hope you will not be afraid of breaking it and just go for it. Annabellethecat.

I'm not a computer person but have learned by default & necessity. If you have a back up external unit, plug that into your commputer & back up your files I would also back up on the cloud and lastly, you own a tablet ( I have apple) and with blue tooth they sync.

Then clear your history, cookies and cache, and also defrag the PC/laptop. Any space you can open up by deleting things no longer needed, always helps

Shut computer down. Don't just shut it off, let it go through the shut down process.

Wait a few minutes. Restart the computer and it should be much more user friendly. Stopping Windows10 shouldn't cause any damage. In fact, Microsoft has offered W-10 free to PC's that upgraded to Windows 7, for several months. Your backed up info will sync if anything was lost unintentionally.

Hope tthis helps a little.

.

Jordan2--I don't know if what you're experiencing is the same as what I, and so many others have dealt with the last few months, but I'll tell you my personal situation. For me, it started during April's patch Tuesday. I had never had any problems with getting updates on my Windows 7 computer until then. Checked out everything I could think of--made sure BITS, etc. was running properly in local services, ran the troubleshooter and fixit tool (found some things and fixed, but still couldn't get updates), did a system scan, ran Malwarebytes, and so on and so on. Nothing fixed the issue, including restoring back to a previous date. Called MS--all they can do is push W10. They were of no help. In fact, both times I had them take remote control of computer, they messed up my touchpad drivers. I had to fix that.

Anyway, after getting nowhere with MS, I searched online and found plenty of others were having this same issue with getting updates on patch Tuesday who used Windows 7. Some started having issues before April; some are lucky and are not having any problems to this day. If you go to answers.microsoft.com, you'll find plenty of others that are in the same boat and their solutions.

Each month now since April, it's been the same solution to stop your computer from endlessly searching for updates (hours and hours and hours!). It's been to set computer to "never check for updates", restart, and then manually install the particular update that's causing problems that month. Each month I've found out which update by going to the above site. Once installed, I change my settings back to "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and away it goes. The computer is once again able to search for all the rest of the updates in a normal amount of time.

This month's troublemaker is KB3161664. I don't know if installing this manually will fix your problem since I don't know if this is what's going on with your computer, but you might want to research about it and try it. I also don't know if you would need to install the updates that caused problems in previous months first in order for this month's to work. Hope you find a solution soon to whatever's causing your trouble (always so many things that can cause problems). If the problem is this particular situation, it's a pretty easy fix--once you know what to do (I spent hours in April looking for what could possibly be wrong). Best of luck!

.

As a rule, as long as the computer is otherwise working fine, you can ignore the updates for a bit and the situation will sort itself out. I'm not sure if it takes multiple shut downs and restarts or if Microsoft does something, but I've had failed downloads and then the same scenario you experienced only to have it fix itself in a few days time and go back to uploading updates fine.

It's so frustrating! I'm afraid if I don't get the important updates (I don't bother with the optional ones) that I'll get a virus or something even worse will happen!

In most cases you'll be fine as long as you're running a decent anti-virus. Updating a computer is challenging as each computer has unique combination of hardware and software. An update that works perfectly on 99% of computers may fail spectacularly on the rest. I've had the exact same problem you had and I've gone nuts trying to fix it, only to ultimately have the problem fix itself. I just don't worry about it any longer and the problem goes away.

Okay, I downloaded the GWX Control Panel (maybe I didn't do it correctly, I don't know) and I'm still having trouble! When I go to Windows Update it says at the bottom Windows 10 Upgrade Reserved View For Confirmation. I click on to search for updates and the search goes on and on (like 2 hours) never stopping. When I came on today it showed I had 1 important update. I click to download it and it won't. I really don't know what else to do. I am so frustrated I could scream!

(should show on your screen)

Enable "Non-critical Windows 10 settings" (should show on your screen)

Also, FYI, there is a black bar across the top of the GWX Control Panel program screen. The "10" in the upper lefthand corner can be clicked to access some housekeeping available for the program, including Check for Updates.

If you're interested, the User Manual for the program is at the lower right of the GWX screen.

NOW for the second problem...the perpetual download when you attempt to download your updates. That is a problem with the recently released Windows 7 update KB3161664. This happens (more often lately) when MS sends through updates without debugging them. You did not cause this. You have a couple of options.

1. Ignore your Updates for a week or so and allow MS to send through a correction which will take care of it. (That would be my suggestion.) I always wait at least a week before installing Updates as I've experienced problem updates several times and waiting usually circumvents them.

                                 OR

2. Run a System Restore using the day/date before you originally installed the update (Tuesday?). If you do this, the GWX Program will be wiped so you'll need to reinstall it after the System Restore completes. Hold off on Updates for another week or so to give MS a chance to make the correction.

My main concern is that you get GWX installed so that you don't have to deal further with the Win 10 forced install as that will be ongoing...at least until the end of July.

I hope I haven't confused you with too much information.
