Help-My Computer is totally different this morning

It took me about 1/2 hour to try to even get into it and it is totally different. I can't get around in i like I used to. There is a Cortana someone to ask questions, but you have to create an account. There is a Microsoft Edge on it. Is this a hack - has someone gotten into my computer or what the heck is going on??!!! Has anyone else had this happen? I have or had Microsoft 7. Thanks for any help. I'm staying on this page because it is so difficult to get on the net with this.

Did it automatically download and install Windows 10?

I "caught" my computer doing this before my very eyes a couple of days ago.

Thanks to a site mentioned on this forum, I downloaded and installed a program that lets you set up a blocker.

If you already have it... I need to look to see if this computer guy has the method to remove it... BRB

I don't see where it says "Windows 10" anywhere, but how could they do this without my permission??? It did say a new download was done when I tried to open it this morning.

Lots of discussion on there about the automatic installing of Windows 10 without the users permission. This program works, too.

It is my opinion that the only programs one should have set to automatically update are the anti-virus program and anti-malware program.

Windows Updates should be set so that you are made aware of updates, but YOU choose which ones to install. I know I've said this a million times here, but I really wish people would listen. Or, hey, you don't know me - that's fine - then ask somebody whose word you trust, and is knowledgeable on the subject, and THEN take the same advice you'll be given.

It's just frustrating to see people not know anything about their computer and not be willing to learn how to maintain it properly.

My computer automatically installed Windows 10 the other night. I think I had receivd a warning and ignored it. I was really afraid of upgrading, but I don't find it that different from Windows 7. Sure, there's Cortana and Edge and I haven't used them yet (and may never use them) but everything I do use is still there. My bookmarks are the same, my desktop is the same (with a few new icons along the bottom of the screen) and I'm not finding anything that hard. I can't imagine going back at this point.

Go to the start button (hopefully it is still in the lower left of the tray at the bottom of the screen.)

In the search box, type "Operating System"

The screen that comes up shows you the name of the operating system. try this and I will check back here in a few minutes will you tell me if you were successful?

Stupid Windows doing this.

There are many people who cannot work on a car but need one for driving. Not everybody can do a power point but not everyone can preach a church sermon. Not everyone can run a marathon and many cannot cook a gourmet meal. It is best to do what we do well and leave what we do not do well to those who do. I never criticize people who cannot 6 languages, nor should anyone else.

Nope, you have been auto updated to Windows 10. You can choose to downgrade to your former IOS if you want to. Edge is one of two browsers you can use in Windows 10. There is Edge and Internet Explorer 11 but the default browser in Win 10 is Edge. You have to find your settings and switch your default browser back to IE 11.

The microsoft article I just read suggested dropping Cortana.

You have been hit with a forced download of Windows 10 by the microsoft corporation.

Can you follow what I put that shows the picture of how to remove Windows 10 and choose "go back to Windows 7?"

Wow, that got taken wayyyyy out of the ballpark.

There ARE some things about which one needs to learn, to at least some degree, to operate. If you don't know how to operate a knife or the stove you'll get burned/cut.

If you don't know how to use a computer properly you will end up with viruses and other malware, and pass it on to others.

If you don't know how to keep a computer up to date and clean you will end up with a variety of problems.

This isn't like having to know how to be an auto mechanic in order to drive the car. You STILL need to know basic maintenance - same thing.

And, I'm not criticizing, per se, I'm trying to help. Everything I said was true. That's all. I'm not trying to attack you, either, NameAlreadyTaken, I'm just defending what I said.

Did you know that any external antivirus programs you have are incompatible with Edge. Only Windows Defender, their own AV program works with Edge. If you want to use McAfee or Norton, as examples, you must change your default browser in your Windows 10 settings to Internet Explorer 11.

If you had automatic updates turned on, you did give them permission. This is a tricky one because MS decided to push Windows 10 to everyone, which they have not done in the past. Prior to Windows 10, you had yo pay for an update, so having automatic updates wouldn't cause such a drastic change, This was a huge change and I think it was poor form to push it to people as an automatic update considering they've never done so in the past.

I don't have automatic updates turned on. I have my system set to notify me when there is an update so that I can review before I install.

Maybe I don't understand your post, but I'm using Firefox with no problem. Windows 10 is not forcing me to use Edge.

Hi smoky! I don't think she is trying to say that they FORCE you to use their new browser.

She said that it is installed as their default, and IE11 is also still there.

You can also install additional browsers, just like you did before with Firefox, or Chrome, or whatever additional free browsers are out there.
