Windows 10 you PAY to use YOUR dvd player?!?

So I updated my laptop to Win10 late last year, and never really played around with it. I go to use the DVD player and the disc spins, then stops. Turns out Microsoft now has you go to the "store" and buy a $15 app to use your built in DVD player. What the heck? There are free versions, but CNET doesn't recommend them. Excuse my language, but that sux. I already paid extra to get a laptop with built in optical drive, now I have to pay to use it ?!?!

wow. They are really on a roll in the sleeze department. Forced everything, big time data collecting, and now making people pay to use DVD??

That is just crazy!

They also know they can get away with it, it is them or Apple.

"Microsoft has introduced a DVD Player app for Windows 10 for people who still want to pop in a good, old-fashioned disc to watch a movie.

Officially rolled out July 29, Windows 10 has won praise for introducing several new and interesting features, including the new Start menu, the Cortana voice-activated digital assistant and the Edge browser. But it's also earned some gripes for excluding a couple of key features. For example, there is no Windows Media Center, which won over a small but dedicated fanbase after it was introduced as Windows XP Media Center Edition in 2004. Likewise, there is no DVD player. You can play CDs using the still-included Windows Media Player. But you were out of luck if you want to played a DVD via Microsoft software -- at least until now.

The Microsoft DVD for Windows 10 app, released this week for $15, will play commercial and homemade discs that use the DVD-Video format, though it won't play Blu-ray discs. However, you may not need to pay for the app.

You can get the Windows 10 DVD Player for free -- under certain circumstances. To do so, you must upgrade to Windows 10 from one of the following previous versions: Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 with Windows Media Center or Windows 8.1 with Windows Media Center.

If you upgrade from an edition of Windows 7 that does not include Media Center or you do a clean install of Windows 10 or buy a PC with Windows 10 preinstalled, you cannot score the DVD Player for free.

Also, the free offer is available only for a "limited time," according to Microsoft. And what does Microsoft mean by limited? On its Q&A page on the DVD Player, the company said the timing isn't set yet but that the offer will end at or before the Windows 10 upgrade offer, which lasts for one year after last week's launch.

If you can't get the DVD Player for free, is it worth $15? Only three anonymous people have reviewed the app on its store page so far, but none of them seems thrilled.

One person who gave it three stars out of five referred to it as "functional but lackluster." Another who gave it two stars said it's "way too expensive." And the third who gave it one star offered a laundry list of flaws and missing features. "

I use this software with Windows 8.1. There may be a version that works with Windows 10. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html I give a one time donation to a .ORG, when the software works.

And just one more of the many valid reasons I've seen for NOT going to Windows 10. They keep throwing that notification mess up on my screen and I hit X immediately.

I will happily keep my Windows 7.

I agree that this just seems wrong! It's just another reason I would not upgrade the operating system on an existing computer (many other reasons, but this one is kind of a 'wow'!).

So, when you purchase a brand new Win10 computer, do you have to buy this additional software to use the dvd/blu ray player, or is it just built in that way with the software already on board? A friend of mine just purchased a new Win10 computer. I should ask her about that.

I have two Win7 and two Win8.1 currently operating and I will keep those going as long as possible. As I recall, both operating systems will be supported with security updates for some time - I'm thinking 2020 for Win7, so Win8 must be beyond that.

Raleigh - there is a thread in this same forum about a software (free) that you can install to stop the Win10 solications and updates. It's very small and unintrusive, but it gets rid of it effectively. I'd check it out. Some people have said that Win10 just started installing itself without even permission, so I'd be afraid of that kind of thing.

I always keep my Windows Updates on 'check for updates but let me know so that I can install them myself' (not verbatim but that's close enough for the meaning). IMO, this is an important thing. I've had, in the WAY past, Win UPdates go on their own and corrupt other stuff because too many things were updating. It's probably more efficient now, but I would not assume anything.

I bought a new pc about three months ago. It came with Windows 10. I put in a Star Wars dvd and it played great. I did not have to buy an app.

I'd be willing to bet that about 99.99999% of people who upgraded their OS with Win10 had no idea that it would render their player inoperable, unless they pay money for a fix.

My laptop came with 8 & a free upgrade to 10. I recently allowed the upgrade to go through and, a few days ago, I picked up Season 3 of Scandal to watch from the library. I watched the first 2 seasons using Windows 8.

When I saw this thread I hurried to see if I'd be asked to buy an app but I wasn't. I got a popup asking me what I wanted to do, options suggested were to play the DVD, to get an app, or to do nothing. I just selected play it & it started right up.

I'd have been upset if it tried to get my money when I'd already paid extra for a laptop that could play DVDs.

i have power dvd 12 pre-installed on my computer. i upgraded to windows 10 about 5 months ago. i did not have to buy any app to continue to watch my dvds. everything still plays as it did when i had windows 8.

Oh wow! The different experiences people are having are really interesting. Maybe some manufaturers have different programs for media that work with Win10 and some don't (?).

I know that my Toshiba computers usually have some sort of Toshiba software for playing discs, so it doesn't engage the Windows Media Player. That's the only difference I can imagine.

I just upgraded to Windows 10 today because I don't want to pay for it this summer. I think it's a bum deal that they will stop supporting windows 8.1 with security updates. My laptop didn't come with a dvd player but I was planning on buying a plugin from amazon they are not that expensive, so I will see if I'm required to "pay" when I use it.

I am noticing that my startup time is slower with Windows 10 and I hate that each time I start it up I have to click no I'm not interested to Cortana.

It's also much slower when I have to refresh the page.

As long as you go from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, OR you can choose to upgrade to Windows 10, you will continue to get security updates. It's just the plain Windows 8, that came out initially, that is being precluded.

Security updates for Windows 8.1 will continue until January 10, 2023. This is according to Microsoft. HTH

I'm going to give Win 10 a few more days. In July there will be a big update for its anniversary.

According to Kim Komando there will be an overhaul to Win 10 at that time. Should be interesting..
