Attention KINDLE Users

Own a Kindle? Listen up — this one’s relevant to you. If you were an early adopter of one of these popular e-readers, you’ve got to update your software, and we mean stat, otherwise your trusty device may go kaput. Well, nothing that drastic, but you get the sense of urgency. In a new post found on its Help & Customer Service page, Amazon has informed its customers that those “using an outdated software version on Kindle e-readers require an important software update by March 22, 2016, in order to continue to download Kindle books from the Cloud, access the Kindle Store, and use other Kindle services on their device.”

This isn’t a warning to be taken lightly — the online retailer stresses, “If you do not update your device by March 22, 2016, you will receive the following message on your device: Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again. If the problem persists, please restart your Kindle from the Menu in Settings and try again. If you see this message on your device on or after March 22, you will need to manually install the latest software update for your device.” And that, my friends, would be fun for no one.

Happily, Amazon is doing everything it can to make the process easier (and for our part, we’re spreading the word). There’s a handy-dandy chart you can refer to in order to determine which Kindle needs which updates, and where and how you can download the necessary software.

@kcladyz I keep my Kindle in airplane mode when I don't need WiFi to extend the battery life. I wonder if it will update automatically when the user connects to WiFi after that date. There were a few comments I read on Amazon that were very critical of the company for forcing customers to update rather than letting a customer choose whether or not to update. Personally, I like the old interface better.

I got that notice about updating, too. The one I got was for my Kindle Keyboard, which I don't use anymore. I'm going to update it though. I've got a Kindle Paperwhite that has automatically updated for me. I don't think it sounds hard to update the Kindle Keyboard, but I've been putting it off. Maybe I"ll do it tomorrow since we're getting close to the deadline on that.

Actually they don't always. I've had to do almost all of my updates manually. And if people don't have the wireless on they won't at all. Of my 3 one needed the update as the wireless hadn't been turned on for quite some time.

If you read on the Amazon boards there are a lot of kindles that have missed the last couple updates, and yes they need to get it figured out quckly.

Exactly.

I got an email from Amazon with this message - saying I had a Kindle Keyboard and needed to do this.

I went through several gyrations trying to figure out what to do to get it to update - no dice.

Then I went on Amazon and looked at my device - it's actually a Kindle Touch and when I checked the latest version- it was already updated.

I rarely use this one since I now also have a KIndle Fire, but it's good to know that it's fine if I want to use it.

I just updated my Kindle Keyboard. It was very easy to do. I don't use this one anymore since I got my Kindle Paperwhite but thought I should update it anyway since I still had it.

Thanks for posting this. I always keep mine charged and with the wi-fi on, but I gave one to my dad last year and I don't know what he's doing. I'll make sure I let him know about this today.

I apologize. i did not mean to sound like a jerk earlier. I been sick for like a month now and its making me cranky

I found info on this. it affects pre-2012 models.

This webpage gives you an idea on what software version will be safe. list is on the bottom of the page

I have two. The newer Paperwhite was already up-to-date, but the older one w/keyboard just had to be plugged in. They said overnight, but it seemed quicker.

I waited until recently to update and amazon actually sent me a postcard (in the mail) as a reminder.

I don't have Wi-Fi on my newer Paperwhite, just the 3G, so if it ever needs updating, I hope it can just be plugged in to use the 3G wireless. I am not interested in Wi-Fi and I noticed that amazon said on its site that the newer models would be updated via Wi-Fi.

I have a question: I have a Kindle Keyboard that I use everyday. So, if I understand what I read in one of the links on Amazon, because I have WiFi and use it daily,

I don't have to do anything, it will update itself, Right?

It should be, but I'm amazed at how many owners are several updates behind. I've always got emails about them and made sure I did it manually if it didn't automatically.

Another note. The one of three that needed the update showed the same email I got on the kindle it's self as soon as I turned the wireless on. Also when it was done. For mine there's no visual difference and I think this is why people are confused.

Thanks for this thread, as I have a paperwhite and knew nothing about this update. Did not get any email. I did get the update installed last night and am good to go, I think. Thanks again.
