My DH is a techy and says Windows 10 is not bad but do a Google search for "Windows 10 privacy tool" to look for tools that aid you in ensuring your privacy as otherwise Windows 10 sends so much personal info to Microsoft it's not even funny. For those that upgraded to Windows 10 or had it forced on them do a Google search for "Windows 10 rollback" for instructions on how to rollback to your previous OS but take note - this option is only available for 30 days after the upgrade.

Oh wow, I didn't know they were going to FORCE people to upgrade their OS to Win10. That's not too cool. What if you have programs, or other things, that are not compatible? Seems like it should be a choice thing.

None of my computers have tried to force it - yet. I'm trying to be mindful, when doing Win updates, to block the ones that are pertinent to Win10, since my computers are not Win10.

I find it profoundly annoying that that stupid thing keeps being in my taskbar every time I start up a computer. I'm hating that there seems to be less and less choices. They force all this junk into all the newer operating systems and it's just too bad if you don't want to use it.

Much ado about nothing. I upgraded a few months ago. No problems whatsoever. I really like it. The worst part is trying to figure out where things are and I did some muttering trying to figure out where to find things. But once you sit down and play with the system, it doesn't take all that long to get the hang of it.You need to want to learn how to do things. I like knowing how my computer works, so I was fine.

FWIW, my girlfriend's computer decided to upgrade to 10 and she didn't notice until it was 70% finished. She said there was no Cancel button to stop it and she panicked and shut her computer down. In doing so, she lost everything on her hard drive and now has to re-install Windows 7. She is not computer savvy and has her work cut out for her. I can't do it as she lives in another state.

It pays to understand your computer, so when something happens you can fix it.

I had had read that, eventually MS would upgrade 7 and 8 to 10. Evidently that's true because my GF had no idea it was going to upgrade and she wanted nothing to do with 10. Me, I like it. No problems.

I finally changed my Update settings in my Control Panel.

Now it's set to "Windows Update is set to check with me before downloading and installing updates".

However, that screen telling me Your Upgrade is Ready to Install continues to monopolize my desktop and won't go away no matter what I do.

I guess Microsoft didn't anticipate so much pushback with this upgrade!

@chickenbutt wrote:

Hi @chickenbutt,

I'm not using Windows anymore. I'm on a Chromebook, as I got tired of all of the Windows-based maintenance and troubleshooting that I used to do, until our old PC stopped working.

Anyway, I'm talking to you "off the top of my head" right now.

I think that there should be a way to turn off the Windows 10 updates if you don't want them.

I'm not sure what OS you're using, but I would try going in to your Control Panel in your computer, and then checking your Windows Updates section.

I would then look and see if there is something there, like a check box for Windows 10.

If there is, I would then "uncheck it" if there is some place that you can do that. That should stop it from trying to install.

I don't know if any of this will work or not, but I used to get notices for things that I didn't want to automatically install when I was using Vista, and I used to check off the programs that I didn't want to install. Otherwise they do seem to try and "sneak" in there.

Hi Toppers! Thanks for the info. I just looked and didn't see anything about that in Updates. This update thing is supposed to end in July so I hope it disappears at that time.

BTW, did you see my response to you in that thread in the 'Recipes' forum? I apologize for the misunderstanding. On that note, and from some of the other posts I saw, I think that I am now sorry for even saying anything. heh - it's so easy to be misunderstood on this board. I was just going to delete my post until I saw that some people quoted it. Oh well.

I don't like when they try and "sneak" them in.

I remember that happening to me, all too well. I think that it was for a browser change/update for IE that was not compatible with my computer at the time. I had to go and change it back to a previous version.

I think what I ended up doing was changing my updates from "automatic" to having it tell me that they were available, but then letting me install and download them myself.
