OS X El Capitan

I got an e-mail from Apple a few months ago about upgrading to El Capitan. I haven't done it yet because I've read there are problems with it. I'm wondering what others experiences have been. I don't want to do anything to mess up my computer but am wondering if I should be current with El Capitan.

I installed it the day it came out and I haven't had any issues.

I'm with you. I have always waited a while before downloading anything new from Apple because there are so many comments about problems. I still have the email to upgrade, but haven't made up my mind yet. Maybe we'll get more comments here.

Mine stopped 2X but I was able to re-start.

Much smoother than Yosemite.

I know I'm really behind the times. I can't install it as I'm using the last OS that won't, OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Guess they ran out of cats. My son say I really need to get a new computer that has it. Maybe for my birthday.

@Cookie2025 What do you mean that it stopped 2x? Did it stop while you were installing it, and you had to restart?

I am still using the last version of Yosemite v10.10.5. I'm an old school Mac Babe, "don't fix what ain't broken" when it comes to OS'es.

Whenever upgrades come out, I read all the reviews I can get my cyber fingers on prior to upgrading. Then if & when I do upgrade, I always wait for v3. That being said.....

I will be skipping EC *for now.* Yosemite & I are still lovers. As long as he treats me right, he won't be thrown to the curb.

I hate this "Best Answer" button. Every time I heart a post in this thread I'm so afraid I'll hit "Best Answer." It seems like that's telling people the thread is closed. I don't understand why it's there.

I updated when I got the notice and the only problem, some older games aren't compatible. Even when I used Windows computers, I installed secuity updates when available and never had any problems.

I got a new iMac that had El Capitan installed. I've had no technical problems. I've just had to learn some new stuff espcially with Pages and Numbers; really not a problem.

Thanks @glb613 and @Cats3000. I use Pages a lot. I hope the changes are improvements and not just confusing. I think I am going to download it soon.

I always install the new updates as soon as they're released. El Capitan has been out and in use since September 2015, so it's been through plenty of post-beta "testing." I didn't have any problems with the installation -- no interruptions, and it ran smoothly. I can understand why some like to wait, and as long as your OS X is still supported by Apple and is still receiving security updates, that's not a problem... other than the fact that application software and websites gradually start to adapt to and favor the newest OS X version. So, you might find an increasing number of glitches and if you report them you might get the response to "update your software."

Thank you @dooBdoo. I didn't realize it had been out so long. I didn't get the e-mail about it until November. Is this something that takes hours to download? Do I need to do it overnight? I'm thinking there was a download that I did right after I got my computer, and Apple told me to do it overnight. I may be remembering incorrectly.

Oops! I was editing my post when you quoted it, @NickNack! I made a mistake, and looked at the wrong installation info -- it was released at the end of September, not June. It will be a lengthy download/install, but the amount of time will vary based on your internet speed and also your device. I really can't remember how long it took, but in checking online the reports I see say it varied from 45 minutes to a couple of hours. Sometimes they recommend night installs just because of online traffic to the servers, when many people are trying to update at the same time.

Actually, once you get accustomed to the new Pages, it really is OK. It's just somewhat more complicate in some functions and actually simpler in others. You can get one of the ".......For Dummies" books for El Capitan and it'll help you adjust.

@dooBdoo or anyone who can help. I have a really stupid question that I'm almost embarassed to ask. I have Thunderbird e-mail on my computer. I mostly use Mail, but use Thunderbird for a different e-mail account that I have. Will the Thunderbird icon along the bottom of my screen (is it called the dock?) go away when I download El Capitan? If I'm not explaining myself well, it's what I click on to get to my Thunderbird e-mail. I really need that icon/e-mail to stay.

I'm assuming it won't have any effect on it but wanted to make sure.
