What is Windows 10?

I keep getting messages on my computer to upgrade for free to Windows 10. I am not tech smart and am afraid to upgrade as it will be a complicated mess. Afraid to mess with what I have. I umderstand that eventually we will have to upgrade. What exactly is the difference and why should we get it?

Please help.

I'm not tech savvy either. But I do know that Windows 10 is the latest version, but along with upgrading comes changes ... not always good. I just keep x-ing out of it.

I have Windows 7 and I don't plan on updating until I HAVE TO. I'm happy with what I have right now. Do you know what you have? I would not update if you don't have to.

If I wanted Windows 10 I would buy a computer with it already installed.

You will not have to upgrade any computer to Window 10. When you buy a new computer, you will get Window 10. There is an old expression,If it is not broke do not fix it.

I have Windows 7, too...and I am dreading the day I have to upgrade.....I know I will go into panic mode....lol...

Windows 10 is the latest Microsoft operating system. Since it's new, you'll have to pay attention as to how people like it, then decide if you want to upgrade. I'm a tablet user so I don't have to worry about it.

I kept getting it too on my 6 year old computer and ignored it especially after reading some posts on here about the issues people were having with doing the upgrade but now my kids got me a new computer for Christmas that already has it, along with a new printer as well. I was anxious and afraid that it would be a whole new ball game and that I would end up giving up and just stick to my Ipad. I am the least tech savy person you could meet and I really mean that. My son set it up for me and after a few struggles and a few lessons from him I'm doing pretty darn good with it. But I would NEVER have attempted to do the upgrade on my old one, I'm too much of a scaredy cat. Fortunately the son who set it up for me lives at home for now and if something should show up or crop up that baffles me he can get me squared away. One thing I didn't like was the new home page that showed up but he did whatever he did to get my old one back so everything looks familiar now. Another thing that kept bothering me was that if I left the computer for about 10 or 15 minutes I'd have to keep putting my password in again, it was a pain, he got into the settings and fixed that for me, I

I'm so clueless and I don't even know where to find "settings". I told him he's become my in-house IT person.

There is no reason to be afraid of learning new things. It's good exercise for your brain and keeps you up to date. Beeing afraid is why you aren't tech savy or able to set up a computer without help. It's not brain surgery people. You can learn unless you have memory loss or dementia.

I agree with what you are saying but my fear is that in trying to learn I will screw something up beyond the point of fixing. I have to say that a couple of times I did come here for help and it was generously given which I appreciated.

Window 10 may be a nice software update, that may not work with my current hardware, printers, keyboard, and mouse.

Your tablet at some point will not be able to update.

Before you update, research turning off ALL the privacy settings after you upgrade !

Its about THIRTY !!!!!!

@shaggygirl you can't do that with a computer, they can always be fixed.

I keep getting the win10 thing too, undecided as well.

That doesn't happen. You may not kow how but, it can be fixed. Sometimes it's easier to backup and start over which I've done for people whose computer was so badly infected or corrupted, it was easier to redo.

I usually don't recemmend people upgrade their operating system. The exception is if they first check and see if their programs and devices are compatible. Updating from Windows 7 to 10 is not something I would do. If I wanted Windows 10, I'd buy a computer with it pre-installed.

I bought a new HP computer from QVC and it had Windows 10. It is a very steep learning curve for me. I was so happy with my old Windows 7 and this is a lot different. However, I'm getting there. I play around with it a little bit at a time and I think I'm getting the hang of it.

I don't use it as my main computer though. During the day I use my work computer (which has Windows 7) and at home I usually use my tablet. I'm not sure if I could upload Windows 10. What if you went to someplace like Best Buy and have the Geek team do it for you? That is if you want it.

Before your panic sets in - - This summer I bought a faster better DELL w/windows 10. My computer guy knew I still wanted my windows 7 - - so he eliminated some 10 features and reinstalled windows 7 so this new DELL operates exactly like my old machine. If you know or can hire an expert - they can do the same for you.

This is exactly what I'm doing. I have a good thing IMO so why should I change. I have a friend that just bought a new computer with Windows 10 and she hates it.
