I think the Intel vs AMD question lies with what a user wants to do on their pc. AMD may be less expensive, but I don't think it's "cheap." I've had both & they both worked fine for me. I don't do any gaming, & mostly use my pc for emailing, storing personal documents, internet searches.

Actually, I agree with both you and glb, too. The overall specs are what are important. You (as in "anyone") have to add everything up when you are looking at a computer. You shouldn't just be focusing on the processor alone.

I have said this before too in other posts. I have used both kinds of processors in other computers, and have not been able to notice a difference. They both were fine-both the AMD processor, and the Intel processor. I don't think that the average computer-user is going to notice a difference, either.

I also agree. You won't see any meaningful difference between similar AMD and Intel processors. Now if you're comparing a dual core AMD running at 2.5 mHz to an eight core Intel running at 4.5 mHz then yeah, you'll see a difference, just you would if you flipped the two, but an AMD and Intel processor running in the same speed range with the same number of cores will perform virtually identically.

Thank all who are giving us specific info. I use my computer for very little, so even though it has less versatility than many, it's already more than I need.

I don't save pictures, I don't play games (solitaire really doesn'ty count as a game), I don't listen to music or download music, I rarely even download a recipe.

"Lesser" computers work just fine for those of us who surf a bit, read and write emails, and pay a few bills.

My cheapie laptop is fast reaching the average age for all laptops, so I know it might need to be replaced soon. I certainly am someone who will check specifications, but I also know there's no reason for me to buy top of the line. I can afford to, but it makes absolutely no sense to me to do that.

AMD processors were developed by gamers because the graphics are faster in the mid to moderate range processors without the cost associated with two separate components. The only way the Intel is faster is to get their top of the line, which in a laptop will run in the thousands of dollars range for a gaming laptop like Alienware.

Not the best deal to me, IMO, as far as the TSV today. That Cannon printer they are bundling with this TSV is the exact Cannon printer they sold on HSN about a month ago for $59.00, plus free shipping. And they offered Colors. So, subtract this amount from the TSV offering....not a great deal to me! Personally, I like Intel! Don't care about the backpack. They are probably trying to get rid of those.

I've said pretty much most of what I have to say on this processor topic. From my experiences talking with many people about computers and other electronics in this age of advanced new technologies. For the most part a big percentage aren't familiar with many of the terminologies used, some not familiar with brand names or performance levels, of the components used to put them together.

With computers I've found most are more familiar, when it comes to the OS, with Microsoft than other names when it comes to component brand names inside computers. I was surprised when I read the title of this thread.

Anyways, I hope you have a nice weekend,

hckynut(john

I can't comment on AMD chips. I've been a Mac fan for at least 10 years. I went from a PowerPC chip (Motorola?) to whatever Intel chip was offered on the Mac I wanted.

That said, my problem with computers offered on shopping channels is that they "bundle" a lot of software that I'd never use. They also "bundle" accessories that I'd never use. Finally, they offer "3rd Party" technical support that I'd never use.

I just bought the iMac I'm typing on now. I bought it from the Apple Store on-line with only their "included software". I added a money management program, and that's all I need. I always buy Apple Care because the tech support is outstanding. In fact, in setting up this iMac, I ran into trouble. The Apple tech spent a better part of an hour with me to undo some stuff that happened when what was on my old hard drive was migrated to the new computer.

I suppose different people are going to prefer different processors. I've had either one or two (can't remember for sure) computers with AMD processors and my husband has one. I found just for our regular computer use they were slower than comparative Intel processors. I've also seen them become problematic faster.

AMD processors are cheaper and, IMO, that is reflected in the quality and speed. That's JMNSHO, based on my experience over the years. YMMV and that's fine. But just know that they tend to charge Intel prices for AMD processors on these tv shopping 'deals' and that's part of the equation. If one prefers an AMD processor, or doesn't want to pay more for Intel, you'd be best served going through another retailer, aside from tv shopping, or buy through the manufacturer site where you're going to get what you pay for instead of paying for stuff you're not getting.

Okay, so, let me make things really confusing and throw some flies in the ointment here!

For 15 years, I always bought HP computers w/ INTEL processors because I believed HP computers were the best and so were Intel processors.

Two summers ago, QVC had a great TSV deal on an HP Laptop with an AMD A8 processor. I couldn't pass it up .. 'cuz I knew a good deal when I saw it. For months I'd been calling HP sales trying to get a new laptop and all the sales people told me the AMD A8 was a fast processor. So, when I saw the TSV on the "Q" I almost fell off my chair. I knew exactly what I was getting when I bought the TSV on QVC ... an incredible deal I couldn't get from HP directly. I've been very happy with the speed. It's got 8 GBs of RAM and a 1 TB hard drive.

Now, fast forward to last week .....

Another QVC TSV .. this time a DELL computer with 12 GBs of RAM and a 2 TB hard drive.

Let me REPEAT that's -- TWELVE GBs of RAM and a TWO TB hard drive with ... tahh dahhhhh -- an AMD A8 processor!!

Another steal of a deal I'd be a fool to turn down.

I thought my HP was fast, but my new DELL is faster than the speed of light.

How fast is the speed of light? A traveler, moving at the speed of light, would circum-navigate the equator approximately 7.5 times in one second. ROFLMAO!
I'm a happy camper.

Thumbs up for the AMD A8!

I have an iMac with a 1TB HDD. I haven't yet filled it to even 1/2 capacity. So, 1TB is quite enough for me. I do have 16GB of RAM and it is significantly faster than my previous iMAC with 8GB.

As far as "deals are concerned, my previous post gave you my problems with purchasing a computer from ANY TV shopping channel.

@Tigriss wrote:
AMD processors were developed by gamers because the graphics are faster in the mid to moderate range processors without the cost associated with two separate components. The only way the Intel is faster is to get their top of the line, which in a laptop will run in the thousands of dollars range for a gaming laptop like Alienware.

Games buy AMD processors because they can overclock them to run faster. Most gamers would buy or build a computer with an AMD processor. They would save money and get the spec they want.
