Recommended 46" or so tv?

I am considering a new 46" (or close to that) television.

Any recommendations? I'm interested in quality name brands like, for example, Samsung, Sony, or LG and would be leery of purchasing a lesser-known brand.

I have looked on amazon and elsewhere but do like to poll the QVC board since so many of you have great ideas and suggestions.

I'm not looking for a Black Friday deal or anything like that. I will probably not even shop until next year.

Me too!! I've been looking at TVs. I'm interested in any feedback as well. Also input as to the benefit of a Smart TV?

I have several friends who own Smart TV's and the only thing I will tell you (you are going to think I'm crazy) but you should cover up the eye where you can interact with the TV.

My son-in-law (owns a cyber business) told me to do that with my computer. My friends (there are 3 of them) have done it or have relatives who have done it.

Think of it all this way, if it goes out it can come in.

They love the TV itself.

I was always a "Sony gal" until a few years ago when I bought one that was just sub-par to their prior picture quality. I exchanged it for another and I also did not like it.

Just over a month ago we bought a 65" Samsung at Costco and picture is just brilliant. The frame is so slim that it's almost like watching a movie screen. Although it's a SMART TV we're keeping it dumb; our Internet connection is not fast.

Broadcasts in HD are crystal clear - in fact they are a little too clear if the closeup is near an armpit or face stubble!

LG's are nice but I'm not convinced they are good quality.

Sony is scaling back on their TVs but I did see one in Best Buy the other day; it was not nearly as good as my Samsung.

Now, if they could just bring TV manufacturing back to the U.S. but that's another topic altogether. . .

I have a 50" Toshiba Smart TV that was about $600 a year and a half ago. It works fine, and the picture is superior, but I have no use for the "Smart," so I've kept mine "dumb." I wouldn't even have gotten the smart tv except that it was a better TV and less money than the smaller Samsung dumb TV that they had at the time (HH Gregg).

I do get Consumer Reports, and they rate the Samsung very highly, so that would probably be a good choice. I also saw recently where Vizio (and others, I'm sure) has a device in it that tracks what you watch and sends it back to them. That creeps me out.

P.S IMO, you should go no smaller than a 50". My last TV was a 42", but I still wish I gone even bigger than the 50......maybe my eyesight has something to do with that!

INSIGNIA..It is a good brand, overlooked by many. It is low in cost. We have 4 in our family, pictures beautiful, sound excellent. The 42" was purchased over 4yrs ago and we have no problems. Usually the size of the screen is based on how far away you sit from TV. Also the picture is still clear if you are sitting off to either side of it, doesnt blur out. And don't forget you can adjust picture color from the remote that comes with TV. Hope this helps-------tedEbear

The last TV I bought was a 50" Samsung, my first of that brand. It is a smart TV but I didn't buy it for that. I bought it for other features such as HDMI plugs, USB plugs, audio output etc.

Most flatscreen tvs have lousy sound, very tinny. I paired mine with the Bose sound system with great success.

My advice is to figure out what features are important to you and begin your search. Be prepared to add at least a sound bar.

You can calibrate your own TV by searching the Internet for settings for your model. I did that myself rather than pay someone to do it for me.

Love my Samsung. Would buy another. Have had good Sony, good Toshiba, fantastic Pioneer TVs. Would not buy another LG. We were very disappointed in that one but that was more than five years ago. Read your reviews.

Thanks, @Lilysmom for sharing your personal experience. I calibrated my current 32" tv so no worries on that front. I read a lot and am very mechanical.

I'm leaning toward a Samsung. I agree with you and others that Sony used to be much better years ago.

We bought a Samsung after seeing the picture on our son's Samsung. It was incredible. And once we had ours, it put the Sony in our bedroom to shame. When our other son needed to replace his tv with a larger one, he also chose a Samsung. IMO, they can't be beat. We did get a smart tv, as it makes it easier to get Netflix and the MLB app.

Samsung has been the #1 TV for 9 years for a reason. We have 2 of them. One a 37" LCD lit in the master bedroom and our recently bought 65" curved 4k/3d tv in our Patio Room.

Talk about a great picture? I have yet to see any other brand come anywhere close to it when it comes to LED/LCD in 1080p. And when it comes to 4K? I've seen several top brands showing 4K content and if they covered all the names it would take me less tha a second to know which was Samsung.

Yes, they are that good.

This year I replaced 4 TVs as I had the square boxy ones. I bought 2 22" (I think), 32", and a 50" all Samsung. I love them all! I didn't realize how terrible the reception was on my old sets. The 32" and 50" are also Smart TVs. I thought I just had to have a Smart TV but in all honesty I don't even know how to use them! I really don't think you can go wrong with a Samsung and this is from someone who always bought Sony!

We have had our 65" 4k for only a few weeks now and it is in our patio room. I have a Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound System hook up to it via Optical Audio. Now this is by far the best, but?

Now this set has one of the thinnest bezels of all the Samsung models, thus less room for speakers other than having them set in backfire fashion. I've watched a lot of shows, even movies in 4K with a few different types of audio in them. Most are Dolby 5.1, but also DTS and HD Audio.

It is amazing how much sound, and good sound comes out of the tv set running only through the low power speakers it came with installed.

I of course prefer my great surround sound system, but had I not been and audio purist? The sound this TV produces would be good enough for me.

Not sure exactly what you might be asking, " eye thing"? Some Samsung models have an "optional" camera you can buy for certain models Samsung als

has a model with an option that detects certain arm/hand movements to perform functions of the tv set.

There are some reports that the interactive feature (the "eye") that can be used by the viewer can also be used by others to "spy" on you in your home. That's why some people either disable it, or cover the "eye" with something. Those are the reports. I don't know all the details, but have heard about this.

We have two Samsungs and they have excellent pictures. They're smart tv's. One is a 46" & the other is a 32".
