I want a 42 inch TV. I don't need a smart TV. What is good and reliable .

I honestly don't think there's a huge difference anymore. I've bought big name brands (Samsung) and cheap brands (RCA), and both have performed pretty much identically. Because of my experience I tend to go cheap these days and my cheap sets have been fine.

Sony. A cheaper brand that looks and performs well is Vizio.

If you have a Costco in your area go there and check out the Vizio, that's what we bought a 42 inch for the family room and a 32 inch for our bedroom We are very satisfied with our purchases. They works great. Beautiful clear picture and sound.

Sony is a favorite brand of mine. Two of my larger TVs are Sonys and one is a 42".

My little 19" TVs that are in my kitchen and on my desk are Samsung and those have been good.

I also like the Toshiba brand a lot.

Another vote for Vizio purchased through Costco. I can't even remember when I purchased the one I have and the picture is still great and if you have any problems Costco stands behind it.

You can get a one month subscription to Consumer Reports for $7. Just remember to cancel before the next month (if you want to).

Things change so quickly and there are so many choices I find it helpful when purchasing a replacement for something I haven't been in the market for in a while.

I bought an Insignia brand from Best Buy in January. In June, it stopped working. I returned it to Best Buy on June 20 because it was under warranty. I got it back yesterday and there is no sound for Fox.

The printed circuit board needed to be replaced, which makes sense because I didn't have it plugged into a surge protector.

I will soon be buying a new tv set . It will be a Samsung/4k/3d/smart tv. Will be either a 60 or 65" size

a flat screen, not the new Samsung Curve.

I like their products and they didn't get to be the #1 TV manufacturer in the world for 7 years by luck or making bad TV sets.

Samsung is my choice after owning 4 Mitsubishi DLP TV sets. Why? Mitsubishi no longer makes DLP home screen TV sets .

Vizio TV sets are made by AmTran Technology in China and Taiwan. Their LCD screens are said to be made by LG, and their Plasma made by Panasonic.

Thanks for the nice reminder John. My all time favorite TV was the first one I ever bought on my own, a Mitsubishi. I loved that TV and had it forever. Hopefully I won't need another TV for quite a while but you have given me something to think about.

You back kn the states? Had only 1 Sony in all my years in electronics. They were always higher $$ for what I wanted and to me I couldn't justify the higher price.

Have had many of the other major brands in about every type in many different era's of technology.

Right nowni am looking at a Mits TV/Pioneer Receiver/Samsung Blu-ray/Panasonic 4k Blu-ray for when I get my 4k TV set. This is patio room 60" with 5.1 surround.

Entertainment room in basement? Tons more equipment with Pro Series 7 LED front projector/110" screen/Yamaha 7.2 receiver with 2 subwoofers and 9 front/side and rear surround. And 8 other components in stand with big casters on it.

Preferred DLP to LED, much better picture. Buying lamps at over $300 a pop? Bought 2 and decided to go LED and give up the muc truer picture colors. LED is good, but not near as good as DLP on 110" screen.

Felt like typing and since someone asked about brands? Can't stop myself! :-)

I got back Friday Ireland was wonderful. My Sony 46" Smart TV was on sale and the price was comparable to other brands.
