New Kindle Paperwhite available June 30th.

Amazon's just announced a new, redesigned Kindle Paperwhite with better resolution, a new Kindle only font, and other extras for $119. It looks pretty neat, so if anyone is in the market for a new e-reader, you might want to take a look at it.

gardenman, I received an email on the new version and am intrigued. Do you know if the pages turn in the same way as the older version? I've thought about trying the pricier Voyager because of the way it turns pages.

I'm not sure how the page turns work, but they advertise a new "Page Flip" feature.

At this point it looks like the only real difference is the page turn feature where you can turn a page simply by squeezing on the Voyage. The displays now look identical. I don't see much else that's different. I think the Paperwhite still uses swipes or screen touches, but there's not a lot of specifics known right now.

Thanks for posting, gardenman! I have a Nook Simple Touch, but decided recently that I would like to give the Paperwhite a shot, mostly because I would like an e-reader with a backlight. I was hoping the Paperwhite would go on sale for $99, as I've seen that happen a couple times. Maybe I'll wait until holiday season to see if anyone has a sale.

Thanks for posting. I love keeping up with new electronics, especially from Amazon.

It looks to me that this new one has free 3G? I think that is how I understood it.

That would be really nice for older people that want a Kindle but don't have wifi. I can think of a couple right now.

They have had that feature before, but at a higher price.

I saw that ad for the Kindle Paperwhite and was interested. I currently have the Kindle Keyboard and I love turning a page by pressing a "button" on either side. I think if a page had to be turned by touching, I'd have to be so careful not to touch the screen by mistake, thereby turning a page when I didn't mean to.

The backlight on the Paperwhite is what really interests me. That being said, I do love my Kindle Keyboard, which they are not making any longer.

From what I understand, the new Paperwhite will be $189 for the 3G version. The lesser price model is WiFi only. I have 3G on one of the older Kindles, and wouldn't be without that feature. It's just so convenient. I would really love to get one of the new Paperwhites for reading outside, because when I use my Kindle, my iPad with the Kindle app on it, and my smaller tablet with the Kindle app, I have a real glare issue. My iPad and additional tablet both are Verizon connected, so I can download books without any problem, it's just reading on our deck that can be a problem with all 3 devices.

Hi Big Sister, we meet again to discuss Kindle Keyboards! You and I got our Kindles just around the same time, and it was a learning experience for us both.

I got a Kindle Paperwhite with 3G last December as a gift from my hubby for Chanukah. I thought I really wanted it, but I really love my Keyboard too, and didn't open the Paperwhite until last week. Can you believe I kept it sealed in the box for 6 months?

On the plus side, I do enjoy the back lighting. It makes it much easier to see. So far, that's the only plus I can find. The on/off button is teeny-tiny and it's hard to find at the bottom of the device. And, I do not like the method to turn the page. If I'm lying down in bed, holding the Kindle with my left hand and my right hand is resting, I have to move my right hand every two seconds to flip the page. I know I sound so lazy for complaining about that, but it's not comfortable for me. I love that you can flip the pages on the Keyboard on either side. The screen of the Paperwhite is a bit smaller, and it's a bit lighter as well.

I never bothered to check out the directions on how to use this. I'm kind of playing it by ear so far. I guess I should go to youtube and check out the videos of people setting them up. Maybe there's an alternate way to turn pages.

Did you ever use the sound on your Keyboard? I never did. That's a feature that the Paperwhite does not have. Pros vs cons lol

Hi, Sunala, so nice to talk to you. I, too, love my Kindle Keyboard for the exact reasons you love yours. It's really a workhorse and I've had no problems with it. I have not "listened" to it and probably won't. I also love the page turn on the Keyboard, for the reasons you mentioned. You are not lazy; it's just easier on the Keyboard. I have decided I don't want the Paperwhite, at least while my Keyboard is still working well.

I do remember you, Sunala, and that we bought are Keyboards around the same time. I have become a reading fiend, probably about four books a week. Love it!

I'm a Kindle Keyboard user and will be using it until it dies. It has tabs on both side that you can use to advance a page or turn it back. On the Paperwhite, these tabs do not exist. You hold the Paperwhite with one hand while you swipe it to turn the page similar to using a tablet. . For fast readers, this is a big problem. There is another Kindle called the Voyager that supposedly has the page turn tab like features but it is more expensive than the PaperWhite.

Thank you KonaKat. I have the old basic Kindle with the buttons on the side and was considering upgrading to the Paperwhite. From what you are saying then I guess you can't just tap the screen to turn the pages. That is a dealbreaker for me. Thanks so much for the info.

You tap the left side (maybe 20-25% of the left side) to go backward one page and tap the middle or the right to move forward. You do not need to swipe, a tap will do. I haven't had any issues with the placement, but if you are left-handed, it can be a problem.

Do you use both Kindles simultaneously? What I mean is, if you're reading on the Paperwhite and then you decide to use the Keyboard, does the Keyboard have the same book and will it take you to the furthest page read on the Paperwhite?

I'm noticing that with library e-books, it downloads to my Paperwhite, (my choice) and then if I want to read it on the Keyboard, I have to download it to the Keyboard and it does take a few minutes. I probably shouldn't do that because it makes my life more confusing than it already is, but I like using both, according to how I feel and what time of day it is.

Hi, Sunala, I do not have the Paperwhite, but I do have the Kindle Keyboard and I can sync it to my Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 and read the book on there, but I prefer the Keyboard for reading. The Fire 8.9 is a bit heavy to hold and read for any length of time, when I am reading in bed.

Please tell me, how do I get hooked up with my local library to be able to read books on my Kindle? Is it complicated and should I go into the library to set it up?
