Anyone Know Anything About TVs?

I have a 10 year old 32" Sony TV which has always been perfect with a beautiful picture. I turned it off and went to bed the other night; the next morning it wouldn't come on. There is a tiny red blinking light that says "stand by timer". I've never used any timer on this TV. Tried all the buttons on the remote, unplugged and plugged back in. No luck.

I'm betting I inadvertently touched a button but how do I undo it?

I've got a 4 yr old Sony 32" and it has a sleep timer as well as an auto shut off if it's been on for a certain length of time.

Did you try googling the issue? Sometimes it can lead you to a quick fix. Did you unplug all other devices like a dvr or a dvd/blue ray player attached? If it's connected to your internet modem, I'd disconnect everything, give it a break of an hour and then put it all back together.

Pain in the tush, I know.

I don't think you hit a wrong button. Something is wrong. Count how many times it flashes. Do you have the owners manual? Once you know how many times it is flashing put the model number and the number of times it flashes in a Google search bar. Is this a big Sony, like 200 pounder? It probably needs at least one part from what I read. And I am just guessing.

You'd really be amazed what you can find on the internet--even if you no longer have the owner's manual, you should easily be able to find it online. If you aren't used to googling, just go to the google site and do a search on your tv make, model & year, and the issue too...such as 'stand by timer blinking, blank screen.' You will likely find a wealth of info from other customers who have dealt with this issue before you, and you'll be able to learn from them. My husband did this, and ended up fixing our old big screen tv that we were sure was a goner, and we were amazed at how little it took to get it working again. Good luck!

Hi Sarojra,

What is the exact model number of the Sony TV? Check if the same issue occurs when connected to a different source device like DVD player or when the TV is not connected to the cable box. Disconnect the connected devices and turn ON the TV to check if the red light still flashes.

The self-diagnostic function of the TV will cause the STANDBY light to blink or flash when the television detects an issue. Try power resetting the TV and check if it resolves the issue. To power reset, turn off the TV and unplug the TV power cord from the electrical outlet. Let it remain without power for 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. If the TV is plugged into a power strip/surge protector, remove it from the power strip/surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. Turn ON the TV and check if it works as expected.

Depending on the model number of the TV, the information regarding resetting the TV can be found in the supplied user manual. You can download the manual using the below link.

Thank you all so much for your help. It gives me ideas on what to try next. This is a big, heavy unit in an armoire with only a couple of inches on each side so I can't even see the serial number. Have no idea where the manual is. I'll play with it some more.

Why take this opportunity to buy a new TV? Smart LED TVs use less electricity, have a better picture when watching HD channels and let you stream from the internet.

And they weigh a lot less. My Mom's new 32" set weighs all of nine pounds. It's almost scary how little the newer sets weigh.

Man! Tell me about it. The best thing about when I finally replaced my last CRT TV was that it (same size - 32" bedroom tv) went from weighing approximately one zillion pounds to being something that I could actually pick up and move around.

Not only that, but the lesser amount of space it takes up in a room is profound. It looked like my bedroom was about 30% larger! n

Anyway, I hope you were able to find the problem or replace it, if that became your choice. But if it's an old CRT TV you'll love having a new tv in its place for so many reasons.

PS: My las CRT TV was a Sony, too. Two of my current HDTVs are Sonys. I still love the brand.

It's a matter of logistics. I have this big heavy TV in a huge armoire and have no help moving either. I'd hav to come up with a suitable table on which to place it and possibly assemble that. I'm old and don't have the energy to cope with all this. Once in a great while, it would be handy to have a man around here.😜

You might want to check local furniture/electronics stores. Many will deliver and install your new HDTV and then haul away the old one. Smaller stores/chains are generally more accomodating than the bigger chains. You'll pay a bit more than you would by getting a set at a Walmart or other big chain store, but the extra service might make it worthwhile to you.

Kachina, I don't know if this service is available in your area but Amazon now offers all types of assembly and installation services for the products they offer.

It may be worth taking at look to see if what you are looking for is in your area. I know I would appreciate it and hopefully since it's Amazon they would stand behind the folks they are contracting with.

It isn't cheap, but for me it was worth it. I too live alone, upstairs and have some mobility issues. I carried my 26" LCD set upstairs but when it died due to a power surge I could not carry/set up the 32" replacement.

I bought the new set at Best Buy and for a fee (it was $100 then might be more now) they brought the new set, set it up, hooked it up to my cable and DVD player, made sure it was programmed, showed me how it worked, and hauled away my old set and all the packing from the new set - with a smile. It was well worth the cost to me.

We did the same thing for my mother with Best Buy. Money well spent. They took away an ancient RCA cabinet TV!
