No it's not the cable converter box which is about a foot long and a couple inches high. It's the very small digital adapter which is about 3" x 3" x 1" high. When I downgraded my service from Standard to Basic they took away the converter box and replaced it with the digital adapter.

http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/cable-tv/digital-adapter/

I know what a digital convertor or adapter is. You use it when you have a old analog TV. That's why I asked if you have a tube style TV. You posted you have a flat screen television. All newer flat screen TV can accept a digital signal without a converter.

I don't know of a single cable company that doesn't rent a cable box with their service. Depending on what you have, it's a basic cable box (not an adapter), HD box or DRV. While you can buy a DVR, like TIVO, I don't know of any cable box for purchase. It doesn't mean there aren't any but, it's not something you can go to your local Best Buy and get. If you want cable, even the most basic, you need to rent a box.

When I had Standard service (over 300 cable channels) I had a cable box. When I downgraded to Basic service (31 channels total which includes the network channels) a couple of weeks ago they took away the cable box and gave me a digital adapter.

I have 2 tvs. Each one now has a digital adapter (no cable boxes anymore). TWC is telling me I will get zero reception without the digital adapter. I would like to try disconnecting it to see for myself because I don't trust them to tell the truth. However, I'm concerned about messing things up.

My question here is if there is a digital adapter (not a cable box) that I can purchase from Best Buy so that I don't have to pay the ridiculous monthly fee to "rent" the TWC digital adapter when all I'm really getting is network channels.

I have very basic tv service with a cable company. They are nickel and dime-ing me by charging a ridiculous monthly fee for a digital adapter (DTA).

Does anyone know if I can purchase a digital adapter on my own from a retail store such as Best Buy for a one-time charge, hook it up myself and get a good picture? Or is the cable company's digital adapter only compatible with its own service? I don't really understand these things.

Thanks.

back when they were making the switch, i got two vouchers and used them at best buy. i bet target would have them too. maybe one of you friends would have one, if they have bought a digital tv, that doesn't need converter box. craig's list, e-bay, amazon, too. a new, inexpensive tv would solve problem too. these converter boxes aren't for receiving cable feeds.

i have 2 tvs, that i use them on. just local channels, pbs and a couple of religious ones. i added bigger rabbit ears, too. we had a basic cable, on one tv and it wasn't too much, but then cable co. converted to all digital programming. they gave us new boxes, free for 1 yr. that will probably be too expensive, when the year is up.

as far as i know, cable co. offers what works best for there systems. i don't know too much either

I would ask your cable company. I don't think Comcast allows you to because they require the boxes now because people would just move into places and get free basic service by connecting the cable and not calling for service.

In my experience with WOW and Comcast - a receiver is required for premium channels such as HBO, etc. Each cable company has a proprietary receiver. I have ditched premium channels and all ability to DVR (but I kept a VCR) and connected the cable directly to my TV. I was able to get channels like TBS, USA, A&E, etc. I did all of this because at the time I didn't have digital TVS.

Now that I have new digital TVs, I kicked all of it to the curb and get my tv over an RCA antenna that I bought from Walmart.

Justina - are you confident enough with your tv to experiment? I am just assuming here that there is a cable that came through the wall from the outside of your house that must be connected to some adapter then connected to the back or side edge of your tv.

Try removing the adapter and connecting the cable directly. Make sure the TV is off when you do it - you will not damage your tv. See what happens when you just hook the cable without the adapter.

Bird mama, I'd rather find someone a bit more knowledgeable than me to try disconnecting and reconnecting. The digital adapter has 3 cables coming out of it and the connections look a bit more complicated than I'm comfortable with.

Glb, see my post #4. No it's not the cable converter box which is about a foot long and a couple inches high. It's the very small digital adapter which is about 3" x 3" x 1" high. When I downgraded my service from Standard to Basic they took away the converter box and replaced it with the digital adapter.

I only know of rabbit ear antennas that sit on top of the tv - like in the olden days - and I know those won't work where I live.
