I have a Dell computer in my office ..... and Apple laptops at home. IMHO there is no comparison. The Apple products are superior pieces of equipment and more user friendly.

I have a computer that must be about 5 years old or so. It runs on Windows 7. I'm thinking about getting something new. I know some people who have Windows 8 or 8.1 and don't like it. I was wondering if rumors of Windows 10 is true. My nephew has an Apple laptop and loves it. He says it is different from a pc, I'm wondering if I would adapt to it. I do have an iPad Air, iPod Touch, and 2 Kindles. I'm wondering if I even need a computer. I was interested in the Surface Pro 3 but don't know enough about it. Any opinions would be welcomed!

Windows 8.1 is lovely. Don't be afraid of it at all. Windows 10 is coming. I got my mom a Dell XPS 8700 from Costco for Christmas that was a real pleasure to transition her from Windos XP to Windos 8.1 on. She is 78 and has had no problems.

It really just depends on what your needs are. Not wants, but needs. I love my HP laptop for most of what I do. It has to be at least 5 or 6 years old. I do have a Toshiba tablet for when I just want to do minimal e-mail or play games on the couch. But the bulk of what I do is on my laptop. I find it easier to surf, email, pay bills. I don't need anything expensive.

I bought a new computer a couple of months ago and switched to a Mac. I really love it. I've had quite a few questions but have gotten my answers easily. I bought a 13" MacBook Air. Like you, I wasn't sure whether to stay with Windows or switch to a Mac. Everyone I knew who had a Mac loved it, so that's what I decided to go with in the end.

I love my macbook air, but if I didn't need it for school, I might stick to something like an iPad. You can't drag me kicking and screaming back to products that run on windows. If someone were to give me a brand new pc with all the bells and whistles, I'd sell it on Craigslist. Blunt, but true.

My husband has a Chromebook, which he really likes and finds easier to use than the Windows 8 laptop that he was trying to get used to, and just didn't like very much.

I would try and help him look up how to use it on our desktop computer, as in looking for tutorials, etc., and he just found it to be too frustrating.

I didn't care too much for Windows 8 myself. Some people just don't like it, and are waiting for Windows 10 to come out, or are using tablets or Chromebooks instead.

A Chromebook (laptop) or Chromebox (desktop) would be ideal for those uses. They're cheap, fast (boot in less than ten seconds,) virus/malware proof and give you all of the function you need.

I also made the switch from a pc to an iMac about 4 months ago. I had no problems adjusting to the mac and any questions I have can easily be answered through Apple or googling.

My last computer was a 2005 XP and I liked it, but it was old and Norton Antivirus running on it was slowing it to a snail's pace. I heard a lot of complaints about Windows 8+ and didn't want to go that route so decided to make the switch. So far I really like it!

I am struggling along on two laptops right now...one running W7 and one running W8.1. Both have issues of their own, so I am trying to make it until W10 is released or just bite the bullet...aka spend the money...and go with an Apple product. I am really tired of having Window problems, and I agree that Norton slows down my laptops. A tablet won't work for my purposes, so I need a laptop, and I also prefer a CD drive.

He steered me towards my HP because it fits my needs and uses perfectly. He said there was no reason for me to make a huge investment for what I use it for. Here I am all these years later and still in love with the thing. So don't be persuaded to buy a Mac because you think you need it. Go out there and compare both.

I have and love the Surface Pro3. Switching to Windows 8.1 was not an issue at all and I love the tablet form factor. There are many Apple fans here and I do have an Ipad2 but I prefer the Windows ecosystem. I found the Apple versions of Word and Excel an exercise in frustration! In my opinion all the hysteria over Windows 8.1 is ridiculous. The estimated release for Windows 10 is fall 2015 so waiting may not be an option for everyone. From the usage you describe, you probably can get along nicely with just the Ipad.
