topic Question About Wireless Router in Electronics

Let me start off by saying I'm not tech savvy in the least! I just know someone here can offer me advice. I have a separate modem and wireless router. The modem is from TWC, I got it this past year. The router is 4 years old at least. When I got my computer I got the router and had Best Buy come and set everything up. I feel I need to upgrade to a newer router. I saw one on HSN the Almond Touch LCD Smart Router & Range Extender. They make it seem so simple bit I'm afraid I'll have trouble installing it. My questions are is it a matter of swapping one router out for another? Can I keep my present password that is used for my current router? Will all my devices recognize the new router without having to do anything else? These my be silly questions for some of you but I could really use your help!

On the password, you set the password so yes you can keep the same password.

If you do not want to be hassled with resetting all you devices to your new router you should be able to name the new router to match your old one. The wireless network name, or SSID, is what the existing devices all look for. Just write down what you are using now and us that name in the new router. By doing that and using the same password nothing should change for your devices.

This can be a very simple process, some routers on start up will walk you through it during setup. Others it can be a little more complicated, but reading the manual or even contacting the manufacturers customer service can help.

I am not sure about the quality of the HSN router but I just read the manual and it is very simple to change the SSID and set the password.. If you get it post back here on your experience.

It's a little cheaper from Amazon, but HSN gives you 3 months to pay for it. Also if I don't like it HSN has a no hassle return policy and they give you spendable kash for your returns (this wouldn't matter since it's free shipping).

Your computers should recognize the new network.

I've had problems in the past, when I changed my network (i.e. new router), with having to re-install printers. But I think every case would be different.

A newer router isn't a bad idea, especially if your old one doesn't offer the higher levels of security. I had one for years but it only went up to WEP. That's pretty low on the level of security for current time.

I don't have comcast but I think if you have comcast you can save about 8.00 a month if you buy your own modem router but you have to make sure it's compatible with comcast/xfinity and says that on the box.

Verizon wouldn't give me a new modem but wanted to sell me a new wireless modem router so I bought it elsewhere about 20.00 cheaper.

happygal my router is working fine. I just thought that since I have it about 4 or 5 years maybe I should get a new one . This Almond router seemed like it wasn't that hard to set up myself. I read a review and it wasn't very favorable.

Because it was so difficult and confusing for people, many new routers come with a default user name and password from the factory. If you ever look at the list of wireless networks in range, you'll see several with names that are one letter or number different. That's because they are Belkin or Netgear and are using the default settings. The user name and password in on the bottom or side of the router in case you forget.

When I bought a new Linksys N wireless router, I got into the router's settings and set it to the same name and password as my old one. That way, everything connected automatically and I didn't have to reconnect my devices. If you can read instructions, you can change the default user name and password for any new router.

Personally I ignore reviews on any site that doesn't require a verified purchase to post. In Amazon's case even with verified purchase their liberal return policy allows for a lot of bogus reviews. You have to review the reviewer.

I you have purchased newer devices they may benefit from the increased speed. Do you mind giving us the model # of your old router?

It was a deal where you got a router and virus protection software for a certain price. I'm sure the router I got wasn't the very best.

You would be just going from N to N so no improvement. If you were going to upgrade and if any of your other devices support it you would want to go to a A or AC.

Thank you

the new router I just got is AC band

I goggled the router and an article came up from a magazine, I think.I got the router when I purchased my computer from Best Buy. I only have two devices with AC cards. It is not the right time for me to replace my router with an expensive Netgear Nighthawk R7000 for $190.
