Hubby has an iPad & I have a Kindle Fire HDX. I think the Kindle would be a good choice for the purpose you describe & sale prices are really good.

I am thinking about buying a tablet for Christmas. I don't need it for games, movies, etc. I just want to be able to access the Internet, emails, etc. I'm just really confused about what to purchase. What would you suggest for someone who hasn't used a tablet? I want Wifi access. Thank you so much.

I would also recommend an iPad. It's the easiest to use and you will have no problems. Apple makes the best products. They're pricey, but they'll save you in the long run.

I have the 7" Asus and I am very happy with it. The only thing I would replace it with is a 10" when it dies. The 7 is getting a little too small for my older eyes, but it is fits great in my handbag. I have photos of hairstyles I like and can take it to the salon to go over with the stylist. The one thing I miss is the rear camera which my other tablet had on it. My next one will have the camera.

I love my Kindle Fire HDX. My friend has an IPad and I don't see why it is worth so much more money. Mine does everything hers does.

The main thing is size. I have both the 7" and the 8.9". I like the 7" best for portability, playing games and reading. I like the 8.9" best if I am going to do emails or surfing. The size to me was harder that "what brand" to get. I ended up with both. I use both sizes and prefer one over the other, depending on what I'm doing.

If I were wanting it mainly for surfing and emails, whatever brand you get, I'd get the bigger one.

Hope this helps a bit.

BTW, I use the 7" way more than the bigger one.

I-Pad, probably best, but not cheap. There are a LOT of knock-off tablets (Android, not Apple based) that work great. I like the Kindle, but if you're not a reader, it's not really an advantage.

Some of the cheap ones that are out recently do Wifi, games, and email and you can pretty much use them as a PC and camera while traveling. You can spend as little as around fifty bucks.

The I pad starts around $200 or more for the I-pad Mini, which is a big difference. Samsung also makes tablets that many people like. The Galaxy Tab starts around one-fifty.

If you are really stuck on apple, you might try to find a used on someone is upgrading themselves to a different one.

I love my kindle. They are on sale at Amazon. I just bought myself a new HD fire on black Friday. While my old one was great and I had no complaints, the new one is better. Emails are easier to read and it's faster. Best part is it's only around $100. I didn't want to spend more than that, but if I did I'd get the bigger screen.

Try a reconditioned one IPAD from Apple. Don't they still sell those? IPad is the best, and the older models really do a fine job! I have the third edition and hubby had the 2nd up until last year and they worked fine! Apple guarantees them for a certain time. You will start with the brand and operating system that you can grow with and you won't have to switch around figuring out new systems if you start with Apple. I think you will stay with Apple.

If you understand the value of the hardware anything Apple is not a great value for the cost. There are tons of sub $200 Android tablets now that out perform the iPad series. With many name brand Android again you pay for the name and not the performance. Samsung, Toshiba, Asus are all good tablets but they also overcharge for the name. There are good Android Brands like Teclast, Le Pan ( despite some dubious reviews here), are two good brands that give great value and performance. The Gigaset Mini which is here on QVC is an excellent tablet at an amazing price when you consider what you get plus the 8" form factor is one of the best for portability and function.
