There are a couple of ways this happens. You can set up your switch (the caller end) to send a code to the receiving service that makes the caller ID show it's own number as a test. Some services allow this others don't.

If they have a VOIP system it is easy to have the caller ID say pretty much whatever you want it to. If you have a private number and it shows up this means that somewhere some company that has that number has sold it to a marketing company. let's face it there is no such thing as a truly private number. You have to give it out at some point like an emergency contact number. It can even come from a friend getting phished or malwared and it's pulled from their contacts.

There is something that happened that I am confused about. This is about a phone call that came in on my caller ID. I have a private unlisted phone number. The other morning a phone call came in with the ID of my name and phone number. I find this odd since no one here made the phone call and I doubt it could be made anyway. So how does a call come in with my phone number and name. I checked with some friends and my number comes over on their phone as unknown so my ID is still unlisted. Any ideas on this?

I get spoofed calls every day and just got my first one, with my own phone number, a couple of weeks ago. I am beyond fed up with these calls, and have started turning off my phones when I go to bed. They are all scams, and many of them come from outside of the country.

If my husband or daughter need to tell me something, they send a message to me on my iPad, until I get up and turn the phone back on. There have been days when I forget to turn my phone on, and I don't even worry about it now. If it's an important call, they'll leave a message, which a spoofer won't do.

I had thought about just getting rid of the landline phone, but we get a better deal through Comcast by having a triple play package. AND, now the scumbags are calling my cell phone, so you can't get away from them.

Nomorobo isn't available in our area, so I do block quite a few of the phone numbers. However, it's an endless battle because a few days later they are calling back using another number.

I havent received this type of call yet, where I see my own number in the caller ID, but I was getting robo calls everyday coming from a 410 area code. I would restrict the number, and the next day, a new number from the same area code called. Sometimes they called several times a day, and some of the times were early in the morning. It was driving me nuts.

Although I have registered on the national do not call list in the past, I went to the site again recently and registered again. I registered both my home and cell phone numbers. The daily calls I received for months stopped instantly. I've not received an unwanted call since the day I re-registered.

Maybe we are supposed to register on do not call list annually? i've never read that we were supposed to. But next time I start to get calls again I will go to the site and register again.

Ahhhhh, so peaceful now!!!!

In fact, I never give out my number because I have no idea what it is. It's just a Tracfone that I keep in my handbag and for times when my Comcast phone loses service. So, I always thought that I would eventually drop the landline and upgrade my cell phone.

However these callers are mostly robocallers. Computers call phone numbers at random, so eventually my cell phone number ended up on their list anyway.

The whole thing has become a major PITA to me. I'm trying to figure out a way to get rid of phone service all together, lol. But, I guess that's not an option.

I keep my land line (its in a triple bundle so its pennies to keep) only because it is a phone number to give out to places that need it, or to enter in a paper form.

I may or may not answer if anyone calls, but having a number to enter means NO ONE that I do not want to talk to gets my cell number.

My kids use their cell phone numbers for everything (they have never had a land line, ha! new generation). The problem is that their cell phone rings constantly, and 90% of the time they just let it go to voice mail.

I can't be bothered emptying out my cell phone voice mail. My home phone I answer if I know who it is and want to, otherwise it just rings and they hang up after 4 rings. (impatient society).

Someone else recently said they gave up their land line and just make up a fake phone number for forms that have a *phone number required. That's not right either. They could be randomly giving out someone's real phone number!
