A question about iPad usage

I check the usage on my iPad and it's huge despite having no music, photos or videos. I checked each app thinking maybe my games were using so much space. Once again, the numbers don't add up. I'm talking GBs of usage under the category "other". Can this be from updates? If I reset then use a backup, will the usage be the same? If I don't use a backup and simply reinstall the apps I want, can I regain the storage space?

Check in Settings, Privacy, Diagnostics & Usage, Diagnostics & Usage Data. That really builds up over time, and the only way you can "dump" it is by syncing the device.

Excellent, Cha1k!

glb, Ok. I wasn't sure if you knew to check for the storage used by the diagnostics. "Other" storage can be so many things -- for example, the data and info saved for each app, which is separate from the size of the app alone. So, deleting an app (and all the associated data) and then downloading it again does temporarily regain some space.

Other than syncing, and storing several things (like pix, videos, etc.) on my Mac instead of on my iPad -- I do completely erase and restore the iPad fairly often and that does reclaim some space, cleans out some things like log files that we don't see.

I'll try resetting and see what happens. I have 9 GB of "other" and my available storage is down to 3 GB. As I posted, there are NO movies, pictures or music stored. There are days I could throw it against the wall.

Your programs may not have shut down properly. Did you turn it off, let it sit a minute, and restart? If that doesn't help, go to an Apple store and have them fix it. I had to do that once and haven't had a problem since.

That other category has a lot of different stuff in it. Some is important system stuff, other is various data from apps and information about apps, and still some document data gets trapped in there too.

The best way to manage that is to do a restore, then use iCloud backup to restore from. There is not a way to manually locate all of the stuff and manually delete it. A restore will not hurt anything.

Plug iPad into computer > open iTunes > locate iPad from top left drop down > click on iPad summary tab > click restore from middle section.

If you did a backup of the iPad before you hit restore, don't pay attention to any warning that comes up telling you something about losing information or apps. Just click whatever it is that makes it go to restore.

The process will erase, and the reinstall the latest version of iOS (which is 8, so if you are still on 7 beware that restore will put you on 8).Then it will walk you through the process to set up, and you will select from backup. When you come back up, all apps, data, and settings will be just at it was before restore. However, you will see that the Other category is less, typically the amount of whatever the iOS software is.
