I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. it's been pretty much problem free until I downloaded the new OS X Yosemite. since then I've noticed that annoying spinning multi-colored ball occurring frequently and occasionally when I go to log in, this is what my screen looks like. I can log in fine ( and the garbled looking screen goes away) , but I'm worried that either my computer has some kind of potentially costly issue, or there may be some kind of glitch since I went with the Yosemite OS.

anyone have a clue?

Are you running the latest update to Yosemite, v. 10.10.1? I have a desktop iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011), so far haven’t seen a slowdown, no problems with the login screen. Yosemite did introduce a new low-res login screen and also a screen translucency/transparency (can be turned off in Accessibility Preferences) which might have something to do with your problem.

Did you make customized changes to screen/display preferences in the past? If so, that might be a problem with Yosemite’s screen handling.

2 things you might try first:

Startup in Safe Mode, then shut down and restart normally. (http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262)

or

Reset PRAM.

Hope the latest update fixes the issue. But if it doesn't, you should know that it has been widely reported, since the first day of release, that Yosemite is a mess for many. Some Macs are upgrading okay, but others are having loads of problems.

I know an engineer at Apple who works on Yosemite. He told me prior to the release not to touch Yosemite when it came out. Even HE has not upgraded his various Macs and won't until all glitches are worked out. He told me it may be another few months until it's really safe to upgrade.

Also ... I was at my local Apple Store two nights ago buying a cable and I overheard 3 people at the Genius Bar .. all had upgraded to Yosemite and all were there to get the techs to turn their OS back to Mavericks. So ... just wanted you to know that yours is not an isolated case at all.

And, it does apply to your iphone6 ... Apple just spotlighted parts that didn't have to do with the 6 in their message. But it actually did fix a couple of minor glitches on the iPhone6, so I recommend you upgrade. I upgraded my iPhone 6 and iPad yesterday and all is well.

Also, remember that for all major operating system upgrades, like Yosemite, all techs will tell you NOT to upgrade for several months, until all the glitches are discovered and fixed. It's a really good rule of thumb that I've followed since 1984, when I got my first Mac! That advice has always served me well. I just wait until I get the all-clear on major OS releases (often many months after the first release) and then I upgrade. Me and my Macs stay very happy that way.

On 11/21/2014 AspenGrove said:
On 11/21/2014 Mochahoney said:
one more question: I have an iPhone6. when I receive a message from Apple about an update for my phone that doesn't apply to me ( I recently received a message to update something for an iphone 4S), how do I get rid of the message and make the red alert in 'settings' go away? since I'm not going to do the update I wanted to delete it, but I couldn't find a way to do that.

The iOS upgrade is safe to do.

I just wait until I get the all-clear on major OS releases and then I upgrade. Me and my Macs stay very happy that way.

I agree about the iOS updates, AspenGrove. Regarding updates in general, since I work in IT I tend to go ahead and install updates immediately in my home office and soon thereafter in business computers (all the techs I work with do the same thing), but part of the reason is the fact that we want the security updates and we usually can work out any kinks in new software. It certainly doesn't hurt for people to wait a bit, especially when a major update is released. All the Macs I work with, by the way, are doing fine with Yosemite.

I am glad that you provided a picture with your problem. I had read on tech forums of others who had this same, problem, all MacBook pros, but didn't seen a picture of what it looked like. Good to hear that the recent update seems to have fixed it. Like dooBdoo mentioned earlier, it's unlcear on the forums if others see the problem is fixed with the update. I habe a similar problem with my MacBook air, since the update, when I boot into safe mode I get white lines across the screen as its booting up. I've tried it a few times, and always get the same thing happen. This is since I downloaded Yosemity, all was fine before. I am going to to the update to 10.10.1 this weekend and see if that solves it for me. Otherwise, I might wipe the hard drive and do a clean install.

Yep, aspen grove is correct, the iOS update is for all phones. Most of the update is specific for iPhone 4 and iPad 2, but it also includes other things for all phones..they say adding stability. On my iPad 4 and iPhone 5 I noticed safari runs a little better, and also some of the choppy feeling when scrolling from home page to home page, or going from app to app are gone. But, my battery is still taking a hit. Battery issues have been widely reported, so it's a known issue.

thanks again for all your help. but, just in case an update does come along that I don't want to install on my phone, is there a way to delete the alert?

also, when a new update is sent, where is the best place to go to read about it for comments and discussions of pros, cons and issues?

I've not seen away to delete the alert without downloading the update. I get the feeling it's not possible. As for where to read about updates first there are a few places I go. Macrumors.com, this also has a forum section. Plus articles link to the forum, so each article has tons of comments. Macworld.com and mac observer.com are also places I look for info. Many other places too. Of course, there is always the online support community at apple.com, where forums for all of the different products.

I have a 2010 macbook pro and I HATE Yosemite. I haven't had the screen distortion, but that spinning pinwheel is pretty much a constant. Never ever had a problem with my mac, and have bragged about the stability of their upgrades...until now. I am running 10.10.1 and it has not resolved the pinwheel and slow screen painting.

Some people leave their computer on and plugged in all of the time, so just asking because I don't know your habits. If you haven't restarted, try that, and see if it helps. Sometimes when you leave it on it ,over RAM into swap memory, and then that can start to cause that spinning wheel and slowness. I won't get into the specifics about RAM and swap memory here, must try the restart and see what happens.
