I bought the Netgear Nighthawk R7000. Wanted more range for using WiFi outside. Also, it lets you choose a port number for emailing logs and notifications. Many other routers only use port 25 as a default, which doesn't work with Comcast.

I have Verizon landline for my phone. I brought my own cable modem, and of course my wireless router. Today, if I leased equipment from Comcast, I would have one unit. a combo wireless router and cable modem. This equipment would probably not work as well as my own. It would have a single band wireless router, 2.4GHZ, not a dual band.

I have a better modem and a Linksys N wireless router which works well for me. Before you go out and buy an AC router, make sure it will work with your older devices. If it doesn't have the option to broadcast in G, N and AC, your older devices won't connect. I really don't use my G device anymore (Wii), changed the setting from mixed to N only and can tell a difference. I also did a speed test comparing the settings and there was a difference.
