Dell and HP are not the only brands QVC sells. A quick look shows Asus among other brands also being sold on EP and my personal view is that almost anything is preferable to either Dell or HP... Office like software, as noted, is widely available and so this really shouldn't be your criteria for making the choice.

What's The Difference Between Corel Office and Microsoft Office?

I need a new laptop computer. The only reason I'm looking on QVC is because of the easy pays. I don't want McAfee virus protection, which is what Dell seems to carry. I find it irritating that it pops up all the time. I would prefer Trend Micro which seems to be what is on the HP computers. I'm used to Microsoft Office but see that the HP computers come with Corel Office. What is the difference? Is Corel Office comparable? I'm looking for a 15" touch laptop. I would also consider buying locally. I don't have a job right now, though, so the easy pays would really be helpful. My computer is obviously dying and I need a new computer soon. Thanks for any input or advice you have for me.

You can download either Open Office or Libre Office free of charge. They are both compatible with Microsoft Office.

Thanks everyone. If Dell and HP aren't the way to go, what brands would you recommend? I've never heard of Asus. Is it a good brand? I've had my Dell for about seven years and it has worked well for me until now. It's getting very slow. Would either of these be a good computer to go with? If not, what else should I be looking for? Thanks very much for your feedback.

http://www.qvc.com/Dell-15-Touchscreen-Laptop---2GHz-Intel-i7,-8GB-RAM,-1TB-HDD.product.E279922.html?orderId=211308148&itemId=221251415&sc=CRT

http://www.qvc.com/Dell-15-Touch-Laptop---1.7GHz-Intel-i5,-8GB-RAM,-1TB-HDD.product.E279930.html?orderId=211308148&itemId=221251421&sc=CRT

NickNack, here are a few suggestions...

First, I understand the convenience of easy pays, but if you can handle paying out of pocket, you will get a much better deal from a local store or other online store (Best Buy, Staples, Microcenter). QVC is usually overpriced. Your timing is excellent because the next few weeks (November thru Black Friday) is the best time to get a laptop deal. Check out Slickdeals.net, it is a deals site that lists the best deals right now in the country.

For example, the laptop you are looking at is 949 on QVC and only $773 at Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-silver/6685344.p?id=1219234629227&skuId=6685344)

Second, as others have pointed out, do not worry about Office software unless you will use Microsoft Office for school or work.

And, finally, have you considered Macbooks? I find the user interface much cleaner and you don't have to deal with annoying pop up programs running like on Windows 8. Microcenter typically has the regular 13inch model for $999.

One thing I did was make sure the notebook/laptop vents were on the side. Vents on the bottom often lead to failure due to excessive heat build up. No matter what brand you buy, don't buy a notebook with vents on the bottom.

Recommend (Apple) MAC, you won't go back It is a bit pricier, but I have 5 kids, all HS / College..... and myself all have MAC's and no problems with any of them Ever! We even have an old original desktop apple 1999 still works! You get what you pay for with this product. And have always gotten excellent customer service at the Apple Store.

Secondly, HP Hubby has HP, and again really no big problems, customer service helpful.

Had a Dell a few years back..... bought as TSV Horrible experience, customer service tried to be helpful, but had hard time understanding english, just one problem after another...

as above recommend Apple if you don't want problems!

Thanks everyone. I'll look at getting a Mac. I hadn't thought about a 13". I was planning on getting a 15" laptop. I know I would like a Mac much better, but I really didn't think they were affordable. I'll check into the smaller size.

I highly recommend a Dell laptop - my DH bought one when he retired 8 years ago and we are very pleased with it. He only buys Dell and has yet to have a bad experience with them However, I also highly recommend you buy your dell from Dell and not from QVC. They allow you - and help you - to "build your own" only buying the software that you need. When you buy from QVC they sell you a lot you don't need and won't use but you paid for.

Corel software has WordPerfect. When I worked in an office that was my preference because you could toggle into the codes. Made it easier to see where tables started and ended for example but nowadays since they began putting microscope office on most everyone uses word I don't like the version of Corel I have on my computer and seldom use a letter program any more. Excel is part of microscope office and u I am inclined to use that quite a lot
