kivah- the price also depends on if you want a "smart tv" with internet, etc. I opted out for any of those options as I simply would never use them. I'm old school and think internet is for the computer, not tv's I got a very nice, HD 50" LG tv from WalMart for $498.

I've had my Sanyo 26" t.v. for 30 years - and this weekend the audio went out. My neighbor checked it and said, "it's gone". I now need to buy a new, flat screen tv and thought I would check out Costco. I'm electronically-challenged, so I just want it for the tv - maybe a 45". Any suggestions for brand, etc. Somewhere around $500/$600.

My brother, who worked for Panasonic for 35 years doing mostly TV seminars all over the world, once told me that all brands use the same manufacturers for parts. Therefore, get the TV that appeals to you visually. As long as you don't buy the cheapest (which will have the cheapest parts), you will get the same quality whichever brand you buy.

The one in John's link looks like a good deal - LG is a good brand. You can also check Walmart on line. They have a lot of electronics on line that they don't carry in their stores, for really good prices. I've purchased two televisions from Walmart on line. You can have it delivered to a store near you for free.

Nice run on the old TV! I'm sure we all wish things would last that long now, eh?

I like Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba.

Make sure you get 1080 resolution in that size range. I'd go for 120Hz, and as many HDMI ports as possible. You probably don't have any HD stuff yet, but I'd want at least two HDMI ports to start so that if you get a Roku or a Bluray player, etc, you can accommodate them. Plus, one HDMI port is for your cable box. I have Tivos, so those are HDMI. Lots of things to consider there.

Ours are Samsung and LG we've been very happy. We just replaced a 13 year old LG plasma. Not a thing in the world wrong with it except it's too old to accept a ROKU box and we just cut cable. We replaced it with another LG and we have Samsungs throughout the rest of the house. Nice resolution on all. No need for plasma anymore. They've improved a lot. That was such a pain with a plasma. If you move you can't tip them them at all. They must stay right side up.

I bought the LG TV that the Q had as a TSV about a year or so ago. However, when we set it up in my bedroom, I realized that it was really too big for my small room. I kept it for a while, and then decided to switch TVs with one of my daughters, who had a smaller Panasonic in her family room. I loved the LG, but it just made sense to switch because of the sizes.

Both TVs are excellent quality and we are both happy with them.

A couple of years ago I bought a 42 inch Sony through Walmart online. Biggest screen tv I've ever had! It has 240 hz, which as I understand it, is how quickly the picture is refreshed. The sound quality could be better and we might get a sound bar to improve that.

I was so glad when I rotated out my last CRT television. It was my master bdrm tv and only a 32", but that thing weighed at least a million pounds.

I finally gave up and got a flat screen (same size) for that room, and gave away the CRT to somebody who would like to have it. It was a nice Sony, which I replaced with a Sony flat screen.

Aside from the benefits of having an HD TV and a flat screen, the best thing was that the new one weighs so little that even I can pick it up and move it around. Not only that, my bdrm actually looked larger! The amount of space the flat screens take up is just so much less, but the weight is profoundly less.

When our old console TV, remember those?, died we went and bought a nice TV Armoire and then a TV to fit in it. It is a 32" JVC CRT (cathode ray tube) and yes it does weigh about 150 pounds. DH and I lifted it up to put it into the armoire. When it "goes" I'll replace it with a 36" flat screen which will fit. A TV technician told us that TV sets should come with an hours of use monitor, like cars have for mileage. They only last so long.

I got my 40" Samsung at Walmart on line last winter for under $300!! I was a picture tube tv holdout too, when I saw the prices drop so much I decided to treat myself. Samsungs are very highly rated- but I also went to Walmart to check the picture quality of Samsungs vs the other brands.

Mine isn't t a smart tv though- no need to pay extra for that if you think about it. If you wanted your tv to be 'smart' all you need to do is connect your computer to the tv with an hdmi cable!
