35 MM slides

I've been coordinating all my tons of pics and putting them by kid, year, etc. on cd YET I have a 6 full steel containers of 35 mm slides my dad gave me before he passed away. (Almost 50 years worth of pics I'm sure), I can't even find a slide viewer so we can view them. We've been trying to hold them up to light - good part he has them all marked what they are on the rims.

I'm trying to find out how I can take these and put them on a cd - my nephew and I have asked all over and no one knows. They have very special memories to our family of course, that's why we really want to find out how or where.

Any suggestions...thanks!

We used an HP 4370 Scanner to scan the negatives to our computer & burned them to a DVD. It would only scan 2 slides at a time but got the job done. I'm sure there are other ways to do it but this is what we did with all the slides my dad had. If you have a photo shop in town they may do this. You could call to check prices to do this. They have this model scanner on EBay. You can also find slide viewers on EBay.

Forgot to say we also had lots of home movies we took to the photo shop so they could put them all on DVD's. I think it was a little over $100 to do this & get 8 dvds. Plus had 7 sets of lots of photos made.

After my father passed away, he left boxes and boxes of slides and movies that both he and his father had taken over the years. My uncle took the boxes to Costco and had them made in to CD's. Copies were made for various relatives to enjoy and reflect on old memories.

Hi, homedecor1! I don't have experience with this, but I did a quick internet search and it appears there are many retail outlets (like Sam's, Costco, and local photo shops, as others have mentioned) that can do this for you (might be quicker in the long run than finding a way to DIY). Try a search for "35mm slides to disc" or "35mm slides to dvd" in your locale, and you'll get some good ideas.

Check with local camera shops. Many have evolved into business that convert old prints, slides or home movies into the digital format.

Great idea. We have many slides from DH's side of the family. We have a slide projector, but having them on a DVD would be best.

For under $100 you can buy a scanner that will let you scan the slides yourself. Just be advised it gets a bit tedious. You can spend a lot more to get a professional grade scanner, but the difference in price can be shocking. The Ion Omni Scan for around $90 at Amazon gets pretty good reviews.
