WARNING - Apple Pulls iOS Software Update

Apple Inc.said it removed an update of its iOS mobile software after users reported major problems of the latest version of its operating system for iPhones and iPads.

Apple released the first update of its new iOS 8 operating system earlier on Wednesday with the goal of fixing various bugs in the software that had cropped up after its introduction a week ago.

Shortly after the update's release, some users complained that the new version disabled the ability to make phone calls and the ability to use the TouchID fingerprint sensor to unlock devices.

"We have received reports of an issue with the iOS 8.0.1 update. We are actively investigating these reports and will provide information as quickly as we can. In the meantime we have pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update," an Apple spokeswoman said in a statement.

Among the problems that Apple aimed to correct in the latest update were the following: fix a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available on the App Store, fix an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the photo library and fix an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving text messages.

This is why I never update or upgrade as soon as it is released and available.

I rather wait a while to ensure all the kinks have been reported and updates have been issued, which should have resolved all those issues.

Then I do the updates/upgrades.

I have maintained this safe practice for all of my electronics, and it works well for me.

I want to emphasize this is not about iOS 8.0.

It's the newer one, 8.0.1, just released this afternoon and pulled after a couple of hours.

And it appears only the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are affected.

If you’re a victim of the buggy update, restoring your iPhone via iTunes using an iOS 8.0 firmware file appears to be a fix for now.

The easiest solution appears to be downloading the iOS 8 image for either the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus direct from Apple, then plugging your phone in, holding the Option key, and clicking Update on your phone’s info screen in iTunes. Select the IPSW file you just downloaded, and it should roll it back to iOS 8 without removing any of your apps, messages or settings, as we’ve verified with our own hardware. An Apple Store should be able to perform this fix for you if you don’t have access to your computer — our own Sarah Perez is on scene at a local store now where this fix is being performed for some affected customers ... "

I didn't do the update because it would have taken up my entire memory that was left. I plan on purchasing the new IPad when it comes out in October. It will already have the update on it and if not, this time I'm going for the 64 gig instead of the 32. The 32 just wasn't enough memory.

I haven't done the update yet on my phone/pad. I read that some were having some problems, although maybe some of that was user error. Anyway, I thought I would wait until the first update to see if those problems some were experiencing went away. Then I started to think that what I really want the update for is for the things that will make the phone and pad work together with my Mac. Considering the Mac update for Yosemity isn't due out until Oct, I talked myself into waiting until then. For those that did the update already - what are some of the things that you really like? Maybe you can talk me into updating now,,lol.

Thanks for the info - I haven't and probably won't update. Our Macs are 2011 with an older OS and I have a 5c phone. The last time I upgraded my now defunct iPhone4, I had all sorts of problems. I will stay tuned for more.

I have an iPhone and never update it. I only make an occasional call on it and never surf the web or store anything on it.

Reminder:

The OP's article is about 8.0.1, not 8.0. And apparently only affects iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

I understand why some like to wait to update software, but please keep in mind some of these updates contain important security improvements.

Regarding 8.0, which was released last week:

As I posted before it took me a minute to get used to the changes to Safari and the keyboard (playing around with the "Predictive" feature), but no problems. I like the new folder for deleted photos which are saved temporarily, so there's an easy way to retrieve them if we had an "oops, I wish I had kept that photo!"

Some are reporting sluggish response, lots of crashing, and a difference in battery drain. So far, I haven't experienced these issues. (I have the iPad 3rd generation and iPhone 5.)

I love that they added DuckDuckGo to the default search engines. I'm a huge fan of DuckDuckGo and their goal to protect the user's privacy, so this was a pleasant, welcome surprise!

same here! I never, ever update my devices until a couple weeks after the release (or longer!). I've never been sorry.

I chuckled when I read this post. Steve Jobs was a very smart and visionary man, but he wasn't flawless. If you were around for the iPhone 4 launch in 2010 you might remember 'antennagate'. Check it out:

I've tried repeatedly to update my iPad to 8.0 but apparently the server I'm being routed to cannot handle the load and I'm perpetually being shown that the update will take 20 hours. Phooey on that.

I teach iPad classes at our local library. I've had two classes this week with a total of 29 students. I required that they upgrade their iPads to iOS 8 over the weekend because I teach with an iPad that has the latest updates. To avoid confusion between what is on the screen that I project my iPad to, and what they see on their iPads, it is imperative that we are all on the same operating system.

Six students indicated that it took anywhere from 10 - 18 hours for their iPads to update. I started questioning them because that just didn't sound right. It so happens that they all receive internet service from the same company.....which has a reputation in our area for being slow as molasses. None of the other students had any problems updating EXCEPT for those using this ISP.

If your internet is slow....the browser takes awhile to show a graphic intensive webpage...it might be that the company providing your internet service has throttled the bandwidth. Might be worth checking in to.

I updated my iPad air and now it has to constantly be turned off and back on to go to any web sites,it needs rebooted about every second use by holding the home button and on button at the same time. It also just freezes at any given moment and nothing unfreezes it except to turn it off. Anyone else having problems with there iPads?

cha1k, no, it's not my internet provider. I frequently download files over 1 gb in less than 15 minutes. I tried from home with my U-verse, then went to daughter's house where they have business class Twc and got same thing. Checked on-line and found frequent occurrences just like this and the techies said it was Apple's issue, and even Apple admitted it at one point a couple updates ago and said they'd get it fixed. Apparently they haven't.

More info Cha1k - it's not taking 18 - 20 hours to download, you actually get a statement that says "Download Requested" you will be notified (can't remember rest of the statement). You're ending up in a queue.

I decided to try once more, figuring 2 in the morning, plus the big possibility of a lot of folks thinking the issue is with all of the version 8 updates would probably have alleviated the congestion and I was right! The update downloaded in less than 10 minutes!
