On 9/22/2014 jackthebear said:
it is on mine, but what do you use it for?

Bluetooth connects things wirelessly. It has nothing to do with the internet, rather it's how devices connect to each other without the use of any wires. For example, I have a mouse and trackpad for my laptop. They are both connected to the laptop wirelessly. So the laptop recognizes them, but there are no wire physically to the laptop. Another example of Bluetooth use is when people use an ear device with their cell phone. The device in their ear is connected to the cell phone, and they can speak and listen to calls, but there is no wire that physically connects to the phone. Other examples are connecting your phone to your car speaker to listen to music and take calls, or speakers in your home can be connected to your laptop, cell phone or tablet so you can listen to music or whatever from any of those devices. Headphones also are using Bluetooth technology now. Some TVs and surround sound speakers are now also using Bluetooth technology as a way to connect without wires. These are just some examples, and more and more will incorporate wireless Bluetooth connection technology.

In this day and age with all the Bluetooth capable devices I was shocked to learn that my new HP Laptop that was a TSV on August 8th does not have Bluetooth capability. The darn thing has all kinds of bells and whistles so it never dawned on me that there was not Bluetooth capability. Every single PC/Laptop I have bought in the last 3-4 years, including the cheapie $200 model for MIL to just surf the Web and email folks, has it. Cannot believe that with all the other capabilities this unit has, that HP left out Bluetooth. And by the way, that great HP Support is really terrible. 18 minute wait for online support and then the person was asking me questions that didn't even relate to my problem and there was a 5 minute pause between question and answer, each one. Any suggestions on an adapter I now have to schlep to the store and purchase for this Windows 8.1 machine? Really starting to regret this purchase.

Ask them.

HP support never told you what you needed to get bluetooth? Did you ever check HP's online tech support?

Thanks for all the input and yes, Mz iMac, I did try to work with HP online support and it was terrible! See my comments above. I can't believe they are touting that service as a wonderful perk that you now get with HP computers, it was totally a waste of time. In terms of using Bluetooth, to connect with other wireless devices, it is still the standard as other technologies are not uniform from one manufacturer to the other. I have just gotten back into crafting and graphic design and the newest Cricut machine has just come out with a wireless adapter that works via Bluetooth rather than a USB cable. Also can't use with my wireless printers. I saw the one on Amazon nutmeg3, but it did not say compatible with Windows 8.1, only 8 I believe. Does anyone know if it will work with 8.1? Thanks again for all your responses.

Nutmeg3 I just found the Kinivo you were talking about and it does say compatible with 8.1 in the specs. The one I had found when I searched Amazon was an older version that was not compatible. Have used my prime to order. Thanks!

This is technology that connects everything together wirelessly. If anything, you'll see more things start to incorporate bluetooth type of technology into things. Think of "smart homes" of the future. Everything will be connected, from lights to appliances, etc., and all be able to be started/stopped from various devices.

To the OP - i am with you. This day and age you need bluetooth. To your point evening using the latest Cricut, its now connected through bluetooth. And as I stated above, we will see more and more things that will want to connect in this manner.

I so totally agree. The more I thought about my original post the more I thought about all the "smart" technology that makes use of Bluetooth like all the house controls, lights, locks, garage door openers, headphones, etc. Just am really ticked off that this laptop did not come with something as basic as Bluetooth, especially since they touted how great it was to connect other electronics to it. Well, only if the other item accesses your Wifi connection, not Bluetooth. It kind of uses your Wifi in reverse to connect to those devices, but why not just put Bluetooth in the darn thing. Now I have to waste a USB port for a Bluetooth dongle.

Guess I'm the "odd man out" here. I don't really know anything about bluetooth, so don't really care if my stuff has it or not. I have an old laptop that is wireless, and it works perfectly for what I need. However, I will also say that I don't own a smart phone or an iPad or any kind of "pad". I use my old flip cell phone to make and receive calls and if I want to go on the internet, I use my laptop. I'm not someone who has to be connected to the internet all the time. I go for hours, or sometimes 2 or 3 days without reading my e-mail, or looking at Facebook, etc. Correction.........I do read my work e-mail all day long simply because I have to! LOL

I've noticed many times some of the 'deals' QVC offers on electronics, there's either something lacking or it's the same as out of date. I've often wondered if that's why Rick is often the one to hype folks up at midnight. It's like they hope if he yells loud enough, and talks fast enough, people won't notice it's not really a good deal. The more he yells, the more I doubt the value of what is being offered.
