Definitely a Kindle. Barnes and Noble sometimes has financial issues, and I think Amazon will be around longer. I have both and I like the Kindle series better. If you want to go on the net, you need a Fire for the color. Paperwhite and the e-reader Kindles are black and white--WONDERFUL for reading, but not so much for net and color photos.

I have a kindle HD. It does everything I need it to do and more. Can read books, surf the internet, play games. I'm typing from it now. I use it all the time and don't know how I got along without it. I have no experience with a nook. My kindle was a Christmas gift two years ago.

You can go to Amazon and search "Kindle Fire" and see a side-by-side comparison chart.

I went with iPad minis and downloaded the Kindle app. However, I've had lots of problems syncing my Amazon ebooks to my devices (Kindle for PC and iPad app). One day the books are there, and another day they need to be downloaded again.

Because I have so many digital Amazon products in their cloud, I'd probably go for a Kindle before I purchased a Nook. I'd also go for the HDX because of the camera and extra storage (64 GB).

I like the kindle paperwhite and the ipad mini. I have the small 7inch hd fire kindle but after buying the ipad mini I don't use it that much. If a store like target ever has the ipad minis on sale for 199.00 that is a great buy. Then you can get both the kindle and nook apps besides the books at itunes. I get a lot of books at audible too so the kindle fire is good for using whisper sync but I never use it. The paperwhite is great for regular books without illustrations and I get a lot of library books on it.

I need to replace my 5 yo Nook Color so I've been thinking about this. I say neither. The technology arc has gotten to the point of relatively inexpensive (compared to $500 Apples) tablets now being quite good and having apps for both kindle and nook. I'll take a tablet and use a reader app and not be held hostage by B&N or Amazon. The Fire is in many respects just a way to keep you loyal to Amazon. If that's your thing then it wouldn't matter.

I have a NOOK HD+ and I love it, the price was significantly better than the Kindle as I purchased it during the Father's Day sale. I listen to audio books, downloaded from the library, in the car. I am not concerned, as one poster indicated, about Barnes and Noble going under. Several of my co-workers, including our IT person, traded in their Kindle for the NOOK and like it much better.

So it is more in appreciation and respect I have for Amazon that leads me to having a Kindle, both the FireHD and the simple basic e-reader.
