Want to get my granddaughter a tablet for Christmas. What is a good one for 4 year old. I have some educational apps on my ipad that she likes to play with.

I got blasted once for asking this question! A lot of people didn't think a tablet was appropriate for a young child but I do. I guess you're looking for a tablet other than an ipad and that I can't really help you with. I just wanted to share my experience. I have two grandsons that are 4 (almost 5), both having used iPads since they were under 2. My son purchased a leap pad for his son and he never used it, he much prefers the Ipad!! I guess my best advice would be the Ipad, the mini can be had for $199 now most places and since new iPads are going to be announced soon they may still go down in price. Not sure how much the leap pad is but I know it's not cheap and I feel it is really worth it to purchase an Ipad. It really is the best tablet out there and there are TONS of great apps out there for kids. There are cases also that are childproof, I think fisher price has one,

Is this the same child that was 3 years old? Was a thread not long ago asking the same for a 3 year old.

My 3 yr old loves the 7" kindle fire, with parental supervision and with parental controls setting on!

My six year old nephew and three year old niece like the iPad. It's easy for them to use. For those who say that they don't need one should see what they have to do in kindergarten. The six year old has to log himself into his class every day. Some kids don't know how and he helps them do it. If your kids don't know technology they are going to be left behind.

I remember when I was little, I much preferred having the grown up versions of things, rather than the kiddie versions. I vote for iPad rather than Leap Pad.

Our soon to be 4 year old granddaughter has been using an iPad since she was about 2.

There are 4 children (4-9) and they have 3 iPads and 1 mini.

The Leap Frog thing was a waste of money. (for them)

I would purchase an I-Pad mini or a tablet that is simular. My grandchildren have had I-Pads since they were about 2 and they use them just fine. All of our local schools use I-Pads in the classrooms.

I purchased a couple of I-Pads from Apple on line that were refurbished and I don't see any difference from new ones except the price.

A Leap Frog or kiddie tablet is a waste of money...it won't grow with the child.

I would warn you that close-in work and a preschool kid can lead to lengthening of the eyeball shape (due to muscle pull) and nearsightedness. This isn't talked about anymore but it was a big deal in our anatomy class (comparative anatomy--we did a lot of different species.)

I personally do not think four year olds should be using tablets of their own because they will focus in on them as opposed to go outside and using the muscles that promote long-distance vision.

You are free to disagree with any evidence and give the kid what she wants. And I admit, that's what everyone does do.

But I don't think electronics, which do not promote interaction and observation around the child, are appropriate before school age.

Get your granddaughter an Ipad, or at the very least a high tech (but lower priced) tablet which you can load your I apps onto. My niece's 6-yr. old has been using an Ipad for a couple of years now. The little girl attends a special school, but those children still are taught to use tablets. I've watched my niece and inspite of some of her challenges she handles that Ipad quite well.

Apple makes a holder which allows children (or anyone) to have a better grip on the tablet and protects it from breaks if dropped.
