Anti-Virus Protection

My McAfee subscription is about to expire and I'm looking for a good free anti-virus program.

Suggestions please. Thank you.

I just use AVG free and have never had any problems.

If you have Windows 8.x, you already have Windows Defender installed. Use that and uninstall the McAfee.

My computer tech put AVAST on mine. He stated the free version was all I needed. I have not had any issues, and the AVAST has blocked many viruses, since I do a lot of online surfing and shopping. I had a lot of issues in the past prior to getting the AVAST on my computers.

Those mentioned above are good for some virus protection not for all virus protection you would still need to get a Norton or MacAfee for full protection. This told to me by a technician.

I stopped getting the Norton, as I ended up with viruses that Norton could not help me with, so what was the point in paying for it? The Norton never blocked the amount of sites that the AVAST blocks.

I have had Norton for 10 years on several computers... It is worth the $65.00 a year fee. Never have any issues ever.

I've never had a virus, and I've used the free AVG since it came out. The only thing I added was the free malwarebytes program, which is anti-adware.

DO NOT GET AVAST! I've had the worst experience with them. First, they charged me twice - took forever to get a refund. Every time I called them, they would do remote access & using their software, would show me everything that was wrong with my computer - on the verge of crashing, registry corrupted, etc. BUT, they could fix it for several hundred dollars! I knew better & told them what I thought of their scam. Got A-V protection elsewhere and uninstalled Avast. All their "techs" are in India.

I've been through ALL of the antivirus. I ended up with Norton 360 because it covers tablets and phones and it's easy to install and use. MacAfee has too much "junk" along with it. I liked Trend Micro but the easiest one is Norton and it comes with 3 licenses usually, enough for the entire house. You have to renew it yearly, but it usually goes on sale. The list is $89 or so but usually it is around $40.

I have used most of these programs. Norton 360 runs quietly in the background, and causes the least amount of trouble.

Avast is good but like Norton a bit of a resource hog. Bitdefender or AVG are great and are not resource hogs. Anybody telling you you have to use pay antivirus to get good protection is not a tech I would go to twice. This from a tech with 20 years in IT.

Windows Defender in 8.1 is a mid range service at best, still OK for the average user. Look at it this way, how good is the anti virus built by the people who can't build a secure OS?
