topic Help! All my Word files have the Adobe symbol beside them in Electronics

I have a new Windows 7 computer and the transition has been rocky. My most recent issue is that all my former MS Word files now have the red Adobe Reader symbol beside them. When I right click on the files I get the choice of opening them with either Word or Adobe. BUT they won't open in Adobe--I get an error message about the file being corrupted, etc. But they open fine in Word.

I've been opening them in Word and then saving them as docx or whatever the Windows 7 extention is called. But I have hundreds of files and it could take halfway to forever to open and change all of them.

This change from Word to Adobe happened after I'd been using the comptuer for a couple weeks. Did I hit a wrong button somewhere?

I would be grateful for any help. I'm very proficient at using a computer but so clueless about technical issues. TIA
