I had an ASUS laptop that was great. Unfortunately the DC (charging) port broke and I couldn't use it anymore.

Asus makes computer components and those components are typically well reviewed. Their motherboards are typically very well reviewed. A few years ago they decided to combine their components into a fully functioning computer and their computers generally get good reviews. I wouldn't be afraid to buy one. I'd generally recommend going for a higher end version of one of their computers than the entry level models as the components are likely to be a bit sturdier, but dollar for dollar you're probably getting as good a computer from Asus as from anyone else.

DH gave me an Asus tablet for a birthday gift. 11 months later it "froze up" and I had to send it in for service under warranty. Got it back in a few weeks all fully functioning , cost free. Then 3 months later it would not turn on one day. That's it - done. called Asus - they admitted the problem was related to the previous repair but refused to fix it again for free. I threw it away and bought an HP Chromebook. Loved it while I had it but - seriously - 15 months. They are a piece of junk IMO, and I can not wait to tell anyone who will listen DO NOT BUY AN ASUS.

My son has an ASUS for school- he's in an Engineering program. And my daughter wants one for her college needs- Graphic Arts. Some ASUS models have the higher end specs they need-- and it doesn't cost as much as the more known brands with 'like' specs.

My son has had to send to back for repair a couple times now- not sure if it was the computer or just HIM!!! Buying the full 3 year warranty was well worth the investment for a $1000+ laptop.

I have had one since December, a desktop. The screen has built-in speakers which barely work, so I have to hook up extra speakers. I've always had and been happy with Dell, but I guess this one is ok so far.

PS the screen has some super-sensitive buttons on the bottom right, and if you touch them inadvertently, they make a grid pattern on the screen. I had a hard time trying to get rid of the grids, so I'm careful not to touch that lower area of the screen frame.

I've posted a lot about the screen, but the computer seems to work fine.

My IT guy swears by Asus.

On the other hand, he threw a comped HP laptop in the trash after about a year and a lot of problems...

trust me - it is the computer - not your son.

His Newegg extended warranty was great fortunately. The ASUS my daughter wants is a 'Best Buy only' model. The extended warranty is through The Geek Squad- how I dread that! I used them several years ago and had such a runaround with a simple upgrade.

A Macbook costs a fortune, and has a very high theft rate (on college campuses especially).

I speak from 30 years experience as a Designer and a Mac user, a PC will be a difficult to use for the job

Does it really matter where this Asus computer comes from? Newegg would have more inventory than Best Buy. What model computer does her college or university recommend? Do they have any discounts or service contracts?

I have done other posts about mentioning names of other shopping networks. I was told the following by a fellow poster.
