Almost always post on Viewpoints and the Health and Fitness Forums.

My wife is doing ok and has been back to work for several months. I had only an issue that got me to the ER one night and stayed the night for observation, but nothing real serious. My heart rate shot up and I couldn't get it to go down so went to the ER. They wanted to monitor it overnight to see if anything further was going to happen once in came back to its normal beats per minute.

Have never owned a laptop so I know only the basics when it comes to the specs of them. I am not really sure how they compare to a desktop as I know they use different types of processors and such for them.

I looked at the TSV and the specs they certainly look good enough to me for what you say she wants to do with a computer. With a 1tb hard drive she certainly will have plenty of space to store tons of pictures for sure. I know with my present desktop my maximum RAM is 8mb and mine is DDR2, which is an older version of RAM than this laptop.

Wish I could help you more but since I really don't have any hands on experience I don't want to say something that might not be accurate. Just looking at the specs and the fact that it is an HP seems like it would be a good computer for her.

Why don't you post(call out thread) here for "glb613 and/or gardenman", they both know a lot more about laptop computers than I do.

I hope you and yours are doing well and it is always good talking with you. Wish I could help you more but my knowledge of laptops is very limited and I know there are some differences between the laptop versus the desktop when it comes to certain specifications and hardware.

My best to you and I hope your friend gets what she wants in a desktop,

As hckynut said, processors really aren't all that important for most users these days. Pretty much any processor now on the market will work fine on most tasks. I have a CPU usage gadget on my computer now and my typical CPU usage (on a five or six year old dual core AMD processor) is less than 10% most of the time. Any modern CPU will suit the average user just fine. If you're doing video editing or are an avid gamer who wants to max out every spec possible then worry about the CPU, but for the vast majority of users pretty much anything is fine and don't waste money on a higher rated CPU unless you need it. In most cases, even the slowest CPU will be twiddling its thumbs waiting for the data from the hard drive which tends to be the choke point of most modern computers.

When I build a computer I tend to have a $100 rule. I find that to be the sweet spot in computing where you get adequate performance but don't overspend. Any component I buy (CPU, motherboard, hard drive, case, etc.) is typically under $100 and my computers work fine. Would they blow another computer away on a speed test? No, but for day to day use they're great and stay great for about seven or eight years before they need replacing/updating. It gets very easy to look at a component and say, "But this processor is faster and it's only $20 more," but then there will be another one that's a little faster yet for just $20 more and then another that's faster yet for just another $20 more and before long your budget is shot.

There's always a faster CPU out there, but for most users pretty much anything on the market will be adequate. There are crazy computer nerds who custom make motherboards that will hold four (or more) of the latest and greatest CPU's and have amazing specs, but unless you need that kind of computing power (and pretty much no one does) then you're just wasting your money.

One more note, heat is the enemy of laptops and faster processors generally make more heat. So compromising on power in the CPU can be a very good thing with a laptop. You'll likely get better battery life and have a cooler laptop than someone with a more powerful CPU. If you don't absolutely need a more powerful CPU you're better off without one. You'll save money, get longer battery life, have a cooler laptop, and it will likely last longer since there's less heat build up. If it takes an extra second or two to launch a program but has all of those benefits, then that's not a bad trade-off.
