This may be what seals the deal for me to switch to Apple. I have an iPhone and an iPad, and have been happy with them. Not happy about this latest announcement about Windows.

It won't happen. Microsoft threatened to stop supporting XP for years before they actually did.

The article does say that they will provide security patches through 2020, so that's something at least.

So when you completely switch to Apple, come back here and let us know their differences, because there aren't any. Matter of fact, come back here in let's say September when Apple comes out with a bunch of stuff and the devices you have now are announced EOL.

I have Service Pak 1 installed in my Windows 7. From what I read, that will keep mine up to date after Jan. 2015. I just purchased my Windows 7 after getting rid of my XP of 13 years. I pray it will still protect me. That's what they told me when I bought it.

Just called Microsoft. They said that if you have Windows 7 and Service Pak 1 installed, you will have a minimum of 5 years from Jan. 2015 (so 2020) to use Windows 7 and get all the updates. It may be longer depending upon when the next version of W8 comes out. Also, Vista will end before Windows 7 ever does.

She said the article is not correct in all its information. She went and talked to a supervisor who got on the line with me.

So, it looks like we're safe until 2020 and that could get extended 2 more year or more.

Thank you for this information. What a relief. We run 7 on our computers and do not want to upgrade anytime soon if not necessary.

Yeah, last I heard Vista was set to stop being supported in 2017 and Win7, theoretically, in 2020. This is just a 'the sky is falling' thing. One must read all the info to get to the REAL information.

I'm just glad I got someone at Microsoft on the phone. Usually that is a hassle in itself.

I love my Windows 7. I'm not technically advanced enough to have gone from XP to 8. I like it and got a real good deal on my Dell, so was very glad to hear we are safe for awhile yet.

Keep scrolling down on the above, it gives all sorts of info on all the operating systems. I loved XP, had no problems with Vista and am now using and really, really like Windows 7.

I'm actually the opposite. We upgraded to Windows 7 at work and I hate it. I have a Win8 laptop here at home (non-touchscreen) and love that version of Windows. Then again, I'm also an Android OS fan and the tiles/apps of Windows 8 is nothing new and is something I like to use. :-)

The title of the post prompted me to say a not-so-nice word. Thank you, other posters, for adding the longer support information. I feel like I just upgraded from XP to Win7 even though I know it's been a few years. I was NOT looking forward to upgrading to another operating system, especially since Win8 is not my cup of tea.

I'm very glad I was directed to this thread.

One dd has 8. It is horrible.

We are looking at a laptop with 7 and almost got scared off because of this ""support"" deal. Sounds like it's not really a big deal at all.

I will hopefully NEVER by a Mac anything. We had a Mac desktop and a Mac router. Both were junk.
