iPhoto slowdown

Would the number of pictures stored on the hard drive affect how fast or slow iPhoto loads? I've repaired the data base multiple times because of the problems I'm having with it. I plug in my camera, iPhoto starts to load and it hangs. After the repair of permissions, it loads fast, works well for a while then the slowdown returns.

What is the size of your hard drive? How much of your hard drive is photos? You can check that by clicking the apple icon on top left > about this Mac > memory. This will show how much is in photos. Also how much RAM does your computer have, and which version OS X are you using? For example Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

I running OS X 10.9.3, 8 GB of RAM and have plenty of free space. I have a 1TB hard drive with 279 GB free. Most of the used space is music not photos. With that being said, I do have 98 GB of photos stored. If that's the problem, I can always remove the photos I don't look at often. I have backup copies already made so I really don't need them on this hard drive.

If I do repair permissions, iPhoto runs great for a while. Then out of the blue, it starts to slow down and sometimes freezes. This morning, Mail was very slow to open. I have Clamxav, I updated and ran a scan. It didn't find anything which is what I expected. If you or anyone else has a clue, let me know.

yes

and you should really back these up (twice) and remove the bulk from your computer. I only keep photos on my computer that I plan to process and/or enter into competitions or send out for exhibitions.

I just checked -- I have 46 GB of photos stored on my 1TB hard drive -- I am PC and use Adobe products for processing and cataloging.

I have two and some 3 different backups. I'll remove the older photos and see if it helps.

How updated is your the system on your computer.
I had issues with a Nikon camera and my MacBook, they were just not compatiable.

My iPhoto seemed to significantly slow down about 2 updates ago.

My biggest issue with iPhoto is that deleting photos moves them to the trash can and you really have to stay on top of emptying that trash can. If you have any more than a few hundred pics in the trash it takes quite a bit of time for the trash to empty.

When I first transferred everything to my Mac when I bought it, I didn't give it a thought about authorizing iPhoto to import pics, and to my dismay, it imported all the image files from all my BigFishGames games! We're talking thousands of image files. I spent days going through and deleting those images. When I went to the trash I tried to empty it would run for at least 30 minutes and then hang, it couldn't do it. When I researched the issue, I was told to move all the files back out of trash and then do my deletes in groups, then empty the trash.

You learn something new everyday. I didn't realize iPhoto had it's own trash. I emptied it and will see if that helps. My iPhoto started loading slow about 2 updates ago as well. Maybe that's more of the problem than too many pictures.

edit: I emptied the iPhoto trash and it's working great. The program opens fast and is also fast downloading pictures from my camera. Thanks everyone.

That's great! Yes,the pesky iPhoto trash. Many forget about that. Then once you empty the iPhoto trash it moves to your Mac trash,which then needs to be emptied. I haven't experienced problems with a slow iPhoto, but I also don't store all my photo files on the Mac hard drive. I use an external for that. So maybe that is the difference? Let us know if emptying the iPhoto trash solved to problem.

I take a lot of photos of my flowers every year which accounts for the thousands I have on the hard drive. I do have several copies of everything and need to go through them and remove the ones from last year. With a 1 TB hard drive, it's easy to leave photos, movies and other data since you have the room.
