I did searches and couldn't find anything about a virus in the cloud that is infecting iPhones. Where did your granddaughter find this information?

My granddaughter's iPad totally shut down last week. She took it to the Mac store and they were unable to fix it, so they just gave her a new one. That one also shut down within a few days, so they gave her another one. Believe it or not, that one shut down also. She does not want another iPad, and I'm not sure what she is going to replace it with (which she will now have to pay for).

Problem is, she had saved everything to "the cloud" when she was using the first iPad. None of that is retrievable now. The techs worked on the first one she returned and were unable to download her files from "the cloud" since even they could not get the iPad to turn on. All she really cares about are the hundreds of photos she had taken on that iPad that are now gone.

If there is anyone who knows anything about this problem, or iPads in general, I would appreciate suggestions on how she can get her photos back. They are supposed to be up there in "the cloud" somewhere, but she has even tried accessing it from her friends' iPads, and there doesn't seem to be a way to retrieve them. She is so upset.

I know absolutely nothing about Macs or any of their products, so I would appreciate any advice from those of you who may . . . thanks in advance.

I just found out from my daughter that this is an iPhone . . . not an iPad.

Don't know if that makes a difference. I also googled this issue, but not knowing anything about Mac products, don't know what they're talking about.

This is why many of the regulars here preach about having more than one copy of anything important. If you know of someone with an Apple product, see if your daughter can sign on to iCloud, download the photos then put them on a USB drive.

Well what it is that she is looking to retrieve from the cloud? It will save settings and photos, and stuff like that. You can access the cloud online at cloud.com.

If she saved documents to the cloud, she could retrieve them here too. She would need to have saved them in the Pages, Numbers, or Keynotes apps. Or the documents can be access by the app she used to create them. Her music can be accessed by the program she used to purchase/obtain the original version. So for example, if she used iTunes, then she would go to itunes.com online to access her music. If she downloaded books or videos, then she needs to logon to the service or app she used to download them.

But any cloud service is just a utility that syncs things and stores things for devices, its not like you would access the cloud and see your desktop on home screen and a bunch of folders like a computer on a phone or tablet. Its not like a hard drive back up of your device. For that she should have been doing a back up directly to her computer, or another external hard drive.

Its not like she could logon to cloud.com online, and from there open a book, play a song, or watch a movie she downloaded. It doesn't work like that. Thats not what these cloud services are for.

So the problem is photos. The apps are still there, the emails. I lost all my photos when I upgraded thenOS. BUT I found them all on drop box. The Kindle is way better for preserving your stuff, so,when it crashes you register your kindle and everything comes back. But the ipad has better and more apps. What she needs to do is back up her IPad on her computer under ITunes. Now,that doesn't save the photos . You need to back them up separately. Did she use Dropbox. That is an app that you download to all your computers and tablets, phones, and it will save everything to all the other systems. Again, it is just the photos, there are a lot of posts on IPad forums about this. I was just lucky to,find mine on Dropbox. I had my iPad and kindle crash within a month or so and the difference in retrieval was unreal. Wi Kindle, I didn't need to back it up before I sent it in. Everything, unless it is a non Kindle, app, will be saved.

When my Asus broke and could not turn on I was able to retrieve everything from the cloud to my new tablet. This sounds like an Apple problem. I was able to open kindle on the new tablet, enter my username and password and bingo, there was my account.Same for photobucket and all my other apps. Once loaded , get into my account and there was my stuff.

The local apple store has a "Genius Bar" . Customers bring their problems to them. They should know exactly what the problem is, if it is saving to a cloud or accidentally deleting stuff. The Genius bar is the busiest part of THIS store. You should not have to use a friend's iphone to correct the problem.

It makes sense to me that it should still be there and I'm wondering if somehow she deleted it coincidentally with the phone failing.

I signed onto my Apple account at iCloud.com. The upper right side has a help section. From what I read, if she didn't upload her photos to iCloud or photos streaming, she is out of luck. It's not something that is automatic. If she only had her photos stored on her phone, they're gone.

True if she did not sync her phone the pics are gone with the wind - I have worked on Macs for years and switching to the iphone and syncing was easy for me. I am not sure this is even explained when you first get a phone

I never used Apple before I got my iPhone but to make it work the first thing was to connect it to iTunes and sync. The next thing I did was read how to back up everything. And it was easy. I don't know why if people care about what's on their phone they don't make sure they know how to back up what's on it.

On 6/22/2014 ritasNo1Fan said: The local apple store has a "Genius Bar" . Customers bring their problems to them. They should know exactly what the problem is, if it is saving to a cloud or accidentally deleting stuff. The Genius bar is the busiest part of THIS store. You should not have to use a friend's iphone to correct the problem.

The Genius Bar is not going to backup anything for you. In fact, there is a note on the Apple site that states if you take your product to the Genius Bar, make sure to back it up beforehand. They certainly will show you HOW to back up if you ask. But if you take a broken device to them for repair, as she did, they won't make a backup before trying to fix it.

Here is information from Apple website -

Photos in your Photo Stream are already stored in iCloud, so they are not part of your backup. iCloud stores the photos uploaded to My Photo Stream for 30 days. To keep the photos in your photo streams on your device and make them part of your backups, save these photos to your Camera Roll or another album.

To view My Photo Stream or a shared photo stream, make sure the photo stream features are turned on in Settings > Photos & Camera.

To recover photos that originally synced to your device from your computer, sync your device using iTunes on a computer.

To restore Camera Roll photos to an iPhone or iPod touch, the iCloud backup must be from an iPhone or iPod touch. To restore Camera Roll photos to an iPad, the iCloud backup must be from an iPad.
