I USED ONENOTE TO COPY WEBPAGES IN OFFICE AND WHEN I GOT MY NEW HP I USED THE FREE ONE MONTH TRIAL OF OFFICE WITH ONE NOTE. THIS WAS FINE. THE TRIAL EXPIRED, BUT I NOTICED THAT THE MICROSOFT APP STORE HAD ONE NOTE FOR FREE, SO I ADDED IT TO MY COMPUTER. THEN, AS I WAS STARTING TO CLIP A WEBPAGE TO SEND TO ONENOTE, I WAS NOT CAREFUL AND I THINK I OK'D THE USE OF MY ONE NOTE IN THE CLOUD. I DO NOT WANT MY THINGS IN THE CLOUD. I AM NOT MUCH OF A SHARER AND I JUST LIKE KEEPING THINGS ON MY COMPUTER, RATHER THAN HAVING ONE NOTE STORE THINGS FOR ME. TODAY, I BOUGHT SOMETHING AND SENT THE ONLINE RECEIPT TO ONE NOTE. THIS USED TO BE A GREAT WAY TO STORE THINGS. AFTER I REALIZED IT WAS IN THE CLOUD, I DELETED THE POSTING. IT HAD PERSONAL INFORMATION ON IT. WAS I BEING A COMPUTER WIMP? IT SURE IS A CONVENIENT APPLICATION. I ALSO THINK THAT IF I BUY THE PAID VERSION, I CAN STILL STORE ONLY ON MY COMPUTER. COMMENTS ARE WELCOME.

How often do you make backups of your data? If never, the cloud will save it for you. If you turn it off, make sure you create regular backups of the things you can't afford to lose.

I truly dislike OneNote, which came bundled with Microsoft Office when I bought my new Dell from QVC last March. Did you know there is no way to separate and delete just OneNote from the MS Office bundle? I spent an entire day with the Premier Support Techs, and then Microsoft techs and found out it is specifically designed so that it cannot be deleted. (So, they must be getting something out of it.)

I then googled it and found a way to stop anything I created from going to OneNote. So, although it can't be deleted, you can prevent it from collecting information. I'm sorry, this happened a few months ago, so I don't remember where on Google I found this information. However, I suggest you try a search something like "deactivating OneNote within Microsoft Office," as I think that is near to the search criteria I used.

Also, regarding "SkyDrive," which is MS Office's name for "the cloud," that the OP does not want to use . . . I will not use it either and was able to disable that connection through use of Settings/Change PC Settings and turning the Skydrive toggle switch to "Off." There is also a switch to turn off having any downloaded photos automatically saved to SkyDrive. (I am assuming one has Windows 8.0 or 8.1.)

ETA: I just read that if you do not sign up with Microsoft as a user, you will automatically be prevented from using SkyDrive/OneDrive/"cloud." So unless there's some reason you need to be signed up with them (in the future), keep in mind you will automatically be signed up to this default and will have to take the steps in paragraph three above to opt out.

Unfortunately if you want to use Skype- you have to have a Microsoft account. While I'm on the forum--- I have a question regarding an HP ENVY 4500 printer. (all in one -no fax)--- It keeps printing last pages first and has nothing in the tools (or anywhere else that I can find) that will let me print the first page first- which often, when it prints the last page (if there are only two pages) there may only be one sentence on it ( like in the case of printing a coupon) This happened with my old one too- but that had the option to change the settings (even though it "ignored it" my preference anyhow!) Does anyone know how to get it to print properly? Tech support just kept insisting on taking over--- not wanting to tell me how to do it---made me somewhat suspiciousl TIA!

Printing the last page first is printing properly. That way when it's done, the stack is in chronological order. When you choose to print something, a print dialogue box should appear.

When I print I always just select to print page 1 just in case it's going to throw a line or two over to page 2. Especially for emails. Usually there is a lot of misc stuff I don't need on page 2. Don't want to waste the paper. It's a habit now. If I don't get everything I want I can go back and then just print the page I need. I go to File - Print to bring up the print dialog box and print 1 page. I don't print directly from the print icon or that might go right to the printer and not stop at the print box.

Sometimes it also doesn't tell you that it 's going to print 2 pages- I don't know why you get an option of how many pages to print and sometimes not- maybe depends on the site or the coupon- but sometimes the print box just pops up and no choice so you end up with another sheet with just a few unnecessary sentences --especially when printing coupons from stores.

There are a lot of ways you can get it to print on only one page. If you change it to print 1st page 1st, it will still print 2 pages because that isn't the problem. You need to make the fit the page. With your browser open, go to file then page setup or print setup. The choice depends on your browser. There is an option to fit to page or you can change the percentage. If it's printing only one line on the second page, change it to 90%. As always, select OK or apply then print.

While you are in page setup/print setup, click on the different choices and see what is there. As long as you don't click on OK, no changes will take place. I also suggest you click on file, view, edit and tools and see what options you have. Every program I've used with Windows has a help section and it's also is a great source of information. It's one of the best ways to learn how to use a program and your computer.

I like to control my printer from my printer program and the keys on the printer itself. It's one more thing I really hate about Win 8 and 8.1. The process I have to go through just to "scan" something from my printer to an email is ridiculous. This printer is set up with scan ability, but it won't work because Win 8.1 has taken over all scanning processes. Again, it took something so very simple and made it ridiculously complicated.

I'm not sure uninstalling and reinstalling is going to make any difference. I went through several hours with the techs on this and couldn't believe the difficulty level of simply scanning something to an email. It is an eight-point process where one even has to save the file to a directory before being able to then scan it. Totally ridiculous (and the techs think so too).

As long as you don't click on OK, no changes will take place. I also suggest you click on file, view, edit and tools and see what options you have. Every program I've used with Windows has a help section and it's also is a great source of information. It's one of the best ways to learn how to use a program and your computer.

I appreciate your suggestions- you misunderstand that I am not totally new at computers-Or printers and while I have forgotten much, I have also learned much and took notes from a great tech at Dell who has since moved on--

I took apart a Dell desktop at times to get things working, adding memory, checking drivers etc.- but laptops- not going there!--And I've had hp printers (always) and only the wireless have given me problems so I am very familiar with their "programing and I think the software on these is the problem- whether it didn't install properly or I am missing something but since the properties section is displayed as well as "help"- there is nothing to tell how few or how many pages to print nor the order I want printed. I know about changing the browser settings as well.Their forums do not address the problems and I don't want to spend forever looking through them.

I DID send back that Dell that I had complained about running so hot- and I will continue the search for a new one while hoping that the one I am using will continue to hold out ( and it runs Windows 7-- Yea!) Perhaps by then they will have also improved on Windows 8.1-even though I was finally getting the hang of it. ( still didn't like it though) Just another gimmick to get people to pay more for a system that didn't need fixing.

Confession: I was in a store recently and they had some touch models on display-- definitely fun-- almost made me not hate windows 8.

Since you need to learn something new, why not get a Macbook?

Ariane, in 8.1, where will I find the settings for One Drive? BTW I loved the ONENOTE 2007 for storing all web recipes, it kept all of them. I still like the complete version in my trial OFFICE. What is new, that I don't like is that you cant sent emails or email links from ON anymore, unless there is something I am missing.

Hi Mindy – I use a Surface tablet so it may be a little different than on a PC but here is how I access PC settings…

Swipe in from the right side of your home screen. Click on ‘settings’. You should see a number of options for the screen you are on but in the bottom of this panel is a link to ‘change PC settings’. Click on it and you should see a list on the left showing a link for OneDrive. If you click on this you will see ‘File Storage’. This option allows you to shut off ‘Save documents to OneDrive by default’. That should do it. You will still need to delete the copy of your notebook from OneDrive.

Personally, I like having it in the cloud. I can access my notebook on my phone, tablets or anywhere I have an internet connection. I have been using OneDrive and OneNote for several years and wouldn’t be without either. I have a general notebook for sending info I want to save and have a separate cookbook notebook where I save recipes new and old. This is great if you are shopping and need to refer to a recipe! You can still email notes by opening the note you want to send then swiping in from the right of the screen and choosing ‘share’. This has an email choice. HTH!

On 6/26/2014 glb613 said:
Since you need to learn something new, why not get a Macbook?

Hmmm- do you have one? I've never even looked into them- I've only heard that they are expensive- and I don't have a lot of disposable income - You did mention you had a Dell- and that's what I've always had -from desktop to laptops-- it's hard to jump feet first into something entirely foreign.
