On 6/4/2014 dgluvr said:
I've actually had computers for many years- when I ran into trouble with my dell desktop that I ordered direct from dell---and got a terrific tech who since moved on (I assume he is still there) as an exec now. So I'm not a newbie to pcs--and I moved on to a laptop that I had for years and is actually taped together to keep the screen on- with windows 7 installed ( was a gift- had Vista--ugh! so I changed that asap)

But now we're on to 8.1 and it's a whole other animal. And there are new programs that insist you use them (I just tried printing out a coupon and it said I had to run one note and send it to the cloud first--I don't want to send coupons to the cloud-- the darn thing annoying and I'll be on the phone all the time trying to get this set up and that is why, when Ihave exhausted googling or binging or any other forums-- then I come here for what I hope to be a quick answer.

AND as I recall- I did point out what I don't like about someone's answer to another poster who requested help ---They queried... "Does anyone know...? ----AND the Response to the request for help was -"YES"-- that was the extent of the answer --no further "help" from that poster- just "YES".

Why would you need to go to the cloud to print a coupon? I just printed out a coupon for a local grocery store for free chips if you spend $20 all I do is click the printer icon on the top of Firefox and it prints.

I know nothing about the cloud I read once you can store things like pictures on the cloud but I have a click free for all my pictures and backup and I have a Seagate for backup too.

I try to keep things as simple as possible on the laptop I don't use Microsoft Word or one note or Windows 8.1 tiles. I'm sure someone here could help you maybe someone who knows computers will help you out and be kind. As my father use to tell me growing up there are kind people in the world you may have to look hard but there around. My hubby works at a restaurant he is always telling me how rude and hateful people are getting I always tell him it's the day and age we live in.

Good luck dgluvr I hope you get your new Dell figured out and you get the answer to your computer questions. It just takes time Windows 8.1 is a new operating system and it does take time to learn.

I have a question about my new Dell - On the "tiles" it says "MAIL"--- I noticed that when I e-mail --and then sign out- that if I click on that tile --it shows my mail! WHY? I signed out on it yet it's still available via the tile without the password requirement!. Anyone know why?

Yeah, I could call but sometimes it's quicker to ask someone here!

BTW I DID have to call the other night (I'm in the "learning" stage of 8.1- what fun (not)----and the tech even said he preferred Windows 7--- and he told me (after I lamented about 8.1--- that 8.2 would soon be forthcoming maybe a few months as well as Windows 9 probably next year!!! UGH!!!!! Trying to keep up with technology but it's crazy.

Plus my touchpad is weird- sometimes I can shrink or enlarge the page by using both hands- sometimes not at all-- can't scroll along right side like on my old laptop ( have to hold down with cursor on far right of screen where the bar is or use up/down keys. Frustrating but one time I called CS for help and they just screwed up more.

Oh, and one more question- I noticed someone wrote about the classic shell download on CNET-- when I went to Cnet- it said it was for windows 8---is it also for 8.1? TIA!!!!

It sounds like when you first log onto your computer with your user name and password, you are more than likely using a Microsoft account, which means you are already logged into your email.

If you are a local account instead of a Microsoft account to log into your computer, then I do not have the answer for you.

I hope this helps.

The answer to your mail question is no, you can't change the automatic sign-in with the mail tile. It's built-n to the operating system. You can also change the sensitivity of the touch pad through the control panel. You can also use a mouse. If you don't like the answers I provide, move on.

I was already using Windows 8.1 before I received my new HP laptop so I knew a few things.

When I set up the laptop for the first time it asked me to sign in with a Microsoft account or sign up for one or sign in with a local account that was at the bottom of the page you need a Microsoft account to use the Windows 8.1 tiles if it's to read news or finance play games use the mail tile. I don't use any tiles not even the one for mail and I did not want a Microsoft account. So I signed in using the local account.

I think a Microsoft account is MSN Hotmail I think Gmail too but I'm not sure about AOL

When I set up the new laptop I used the local account to sign in the laptop has been set up now for a couple of months I think it asked me for my router password but not sure then I was online I then went to Microsoft website and downloaded Windows Essential's 2012 for my photos and mail I don't use any of the tiles.

I only use my computer for scrapbooking and I look at things on QVC and Amazon and I read my news on the internet I don't use Microsoft word or anything like that.

Don't let people upset you by there posts I too have been told off because I buy electronics on QVC or use ez pay hey ez pay helps us and I know what our budget is.

If I can figure out Windows 8.1 I'm sure you can too it is a learning curve it gets our mind to thinking I like Windows 8.1 a lot and I love my new HP laptop my first laptop the only thing I did not care for was the touchpad so I went to Office Depot and bought a wireless mouse and it works great.

Just give 8.1 a chance and don't get frustrated trying to figure it out it is really easy once you get use to it. I wish I was computer savvy and knew more about computers so I could answer your computer questions better but I am no computer expert I learn by reading and trying things on my own. Good luck if I can figure Windows 8.1 out I'm sure you can too. Just give it time.

Good Luck and have a nice day

I'm sure someone here could help you maybe someone who knows computers will help you out and be kind. As my father use to tell me growing up there are kind people in the world you may have to look hard but there around. It just takes time Windows 8.1 is a new operating system and it does take time to learn.

Who wants to store coupons in the cloud? It's a Microsoft program ( ONE DRIVE) of course ----so when I get my phone fixed (when it rains it pours!) I'll call and ask how to get around it- luckily I have another lap that still works (knock wood)
Thanks for the "chat" and good will. One of my children works for a huge hotel chain- hated working in the upscale restaurant because some people are just too rude--( a lot of the clientele was "old" money) tipped lousy and expected something for nothing. Needless to say they opted for another part of the hotel when offered the advancement.

Ah the 'joys' of 8.1. With every update, something gets stupider. First of all, many of your problems will come from Explorer 11. I have E11 and added Google Chrome, because it's faster. They are in some kind of competition with each other. I do not have Outlook, either, but now when I try to send Webpages by email, if I am in E11, the program tells me I must set up Outlook, which I don't have. It did not do this before my last update. Chrome has not let me do this from the time I downloaded, last month. Since you are new, you must go to Microsoft and update your 8.1. You should also get all Dell updates. If you have security software you should run a scan. You should also get Microsoft Updates. Set your security software for automatic updates. You must do all of this, even if the computer arrived, yesterday. You will find with 8.1, that everything you need is hidden in some ridiculous place. It's a process of discovery. Now, as for your emails. What email provider do you use? You will have to set it as your default. Good luck, finding where you do this, mine changed. I will let you know how to do this, once you update. Did you buy the computer with full Office 2013? Some versions, especially business versions, come with Outlook. I had a 30 day trial, without Outlook and Explorer 11 still tells me to set Outlook so I can send Webpages by email- as I said before, this is new. I have Yahoo from Att mail. When you started the computer, you should have had to register with Microsoft and pick a password with them. The whole thing becomes very messy, but I think this is the wave of our future. The mail icon will open in whatever mail is your default. You can set it not to open without a password, I think it is on manage mail, somewhere. Dell will definitely walk you through setting up all this stuff. Call them. HP helped me in the beginning. I have also had to cal McAffee. I have also gone to Microsoft's site and have called ATT my mail and DSL provider. It will take you about three weeks to get everything right.
