I know ... silly question.

My laptop is on it's way out. I do have an Ipad and was wondering if it's safe as a laptop as far as online bill paying. Is my information as safe as a laptop?

It depends on how you use your laptop. I have and Ipad, PC and laptop. I love my Ipad but I would never just have that because of the small screen size and no Java ability meaning you can't open some sites completely. I think it's Java that doesn't work with Apple products. I also don't have a wireless printer so I wouldn't be able to print anything. You would need to by a keyboard you could use with it also because the one it has built in is not very speedy! I love my Ipad and would never be without it but my heavy "work" is done on the other two. Hope that helps some! Oh, I didn't see the safe part, sorry. I have never had an issue with my ipad regarding surfing the net, paying bills etc.

As you can see, different posters have different opinions. There is a "shopper's service", free at the Apple Store, that will help you compare/contrast your usage needs. I recently had a question about a purchase and received valuable, no pressure help. Presently, I think I could use a Mac with an 11" screen, or an iPad. When the time comes to make my purchase, I'll check in with the buyer's service to help me determine what's right for me.

I love my iPad, but it doesn't replace my laptop. It's much slower when I'm surfing the web.

Security can be a concern depending on where you use it. Because it's so portable, people tend to travel with their iPads. Remember that if you're using public WiFi, you should never do banking or anything else where privacy is critical. Other than that, it's just personal preference.

Like BootLvr, I have an IPad and I love it, but it doesn't take the place of a laptop. I had to give my laptop to a grandchild recently because his died and the need was immediate. I miss it terribly, and the IPad, while nice to own, is nowhere near the laptop.

Given a choice of either it would be a laptop every time. Waiting for my new one to come in - hope it gets here soon. Ordered another Mac. I much prefer it to my original PC's.

The iPad is great. It's still not there as a "replacement." It's fine if your lifestyle no longer requires one. If you actually have to work with one, no. Some tasks still require a keyboard and mouse. There is a lot of stuff I can do on my ipad, but I still Microsoft Office, for example. And productivity software will not work on an ipad.

If you are a retiree who just wants to shop, surf, watch media and send emails, then it's OK.

But if you really need the laptop, get that first.

Thanks for all the advice. I find my Ipad to be too slow when it comes to accessing the internet. It's too slow and small and I get impatient. I don't want another big laptop. Maybe I'll invest in a smaller size, i.e. a 14 or 15 inch. I like my Ipad for some things, but for internet shopping and paying bills, I like a laptop. But in the meantime if I need to pay a bill I'll know the Ipad is just as safe.

(You need to plug in your laptop to the cable modem with an ethernet cable.) This is a site to check your speed http://www.speedtest.net/ . You should compare this number with the connection speed listed on your cable or DSL bill.

You should bring your iPad close to your wireless router, and see what the connection speed is like.

You should contact your cable or DSL company about your slow speed. You may have to replace your cable/DSL modem and wireless router.
