Broke my Kindle and have question about the simple basic one

Sigh. I accidentally broke my Keyboard 3G Kindle and need to buy a new Kindle. Due to my budget I'm going to just buy the least expensive, simple one.

I posted a question on the Kindle forum and was told once my new one is registered and set up for WiFi that I can transfer my 500 books by going to the "cloud tab."

My question: WHERE on the basic model is the cloud tab? I'd kind of like to know before I buy it, although my electronic-guru BIL can figure it out for me, I'd like to know ahead of time.

Thanks for any and all help. I really want just the basic one as my budget doesn't allow for the Paperwhite right now, tho I'd love to get one.

I just wanna get my 500 books back! (90% of them were free).

Just go to your ""manage your kindle"" tab. I have two Kindles and can download to either or both. On the right side of the screen is an ""actions"" tab.

When you buy the new one - they are listed as XX's Kindle and XXXX's Kindle #2.

I had the Kindle 3G with the keyboard. It wouldn't connect to WiFi and I decided to replace it. I got a refurbished Kindle 3G Paperwhite. I saved a lot of money buying a refurbished model. The refurbished models also come with a one year warranty and I love the light built right in. It also is easier to read in areas where there is glare and outside. I didn't have any problems downloading books from my Amazon library back on to my new Kindle.

Thanks for the help. I'm really on a tight budget and I'm going on vacation in July and tho I refurbished Paperwhite might be ok, I think I'm going to opt for the Touch. I'd LOVE to get a new Paperwhite, but that's ok, I'm just glad I can get a new one and keep all my books.

I felt really bad about "hurting" my kindle but I was most upset about possibly losing all of my books.

OP: Just curious as to what's 'broken' on your existing Kindle? Have you contacted their customer service folks for help? Maybe it's something they can help you with and you won't have to replace it. I find their phone help to be awesome!!!! Good luck!

Not sure what CC you use, but my Chase Freedom card allows me to use my CC points to pay for Amazon purchases. Love that feature. Used CC points to buy my sis her Kindle Fire for Christmas and a regular kindle for me to use by the pool since I can't see the Fire screen outside. Another idea is to check eBay Daily Deals, they often have good Kindle deals.

First, I don't and won't use ebay and not for this! And with all due respect, I don't care to say what CC I use. I have plenty on my available line of credit. I won't get a refurbished electronic item.

Also, how I broke it was this: I was in bed, the Kindle got shoved under the covers (I didn't notice), my hand went down on it as I was changing positions and I felt a tiny "pop". Now the screen is all messed up, can't turn it off to reboot it, etc. so as far as I can tell it's toast. That's why I didn't call Amazon. I had to once in the past and they were great.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? I hate to bother the Amazon people with something that seems really broken. I got it for Christmas 2010 and feel lost without it!

I'm no expert, but from what you describe, it does sound like it's unfixable. Buy your new Kindle, register it, log in to your Amazon account and go to the "Manage My Devices" tab and you will be able to transfer all of your books that way. Next to each title is a drop down menu and you select which Kindle you want to send the book to. Then when your new Kindle is connected to the internet it will download the ones you've sent.

Have you checked into getting it repaired? My husband just got his phone ""fixed"" at a place called CPR. They fix tablets. In fact a local high school requires all the kids to have tablets. And well you know kids - things break. The store has the contract to fix all the tablets that need repair for that local high school.

They are reasonable and my husband is thrilled with the job they did.

Don't worry about your kindle books. They'll all be available. I had a keyboard too and switched to a paperwhite. Even though it's not the basic kindle, it will work the same. When I got my new one it was already registered in my name and all my book titles were listed. If you have collections on your keyboard like I did, they'll all be there too. When you select the book you want to read, it will download from the cloud to your kindle. I hope that helps.

I have the original Kindle and love it, totally understand your feelings as it is like a good friend and has traveled all over the world with me. Can't use back-lighting for long reading due to migraines.

All my books were purchased through Amazon and are stored by Amazon in my 'library'. Friends and family, with my permission can check out and return books to my library. You might check to see if you have something similar.

If it were me, I would still call Amazon and tell them what happened. Who knows, maybe they'll give you an even better deal on a new Kindle. I find Amazon to be awesome to deal with. Good luck! I'm having cataract surgery tomorrow (on the 2nd eye) but in a few days I will take your advice and call Amazon. Who knows? All they can say is "sorry"!!

They can tell me how to separate the Archived/books I've read from the New books I've not yet read.

About the Archive books vs. the new books--I had to use the drop down menu to send each of the books again to my new Kindle. I had some idea of the ones I had read, but others I wasn't sure. After I downloaded the books that I wasn't sure to my new Kindle, I had to open the books, one at at a time, to read a bit to see if I had previously read that book or not. If you have read it, then just remove it from your new Kindle and that's all there is to it. It still will stay in your Kindle library at Amazon if you want to read it again some other time.

My only advice is to never, ever hesitate about calling Amazon. I have called many times for various reasons, and every single time they have been friendly, helpful, and absolutely willing to help.

One of my problems required a very lengthy call, and the woman I spoke to was lovely and knowledgeable throughout. I have never had the slightest inkling during any of my calls that I was bothering them or that they were in a hurry to get me off the phone. No long waits on hold, and if you want them to call you, they do so within minutes (sometimes seconds!)

I know you said you didn't want to bother them, but that's what they're there for, and they never act as though that's not the case. I'm sure your dilemma is something they've heard before, and - even if they can't do much - at least you'll feel that you've covered all bases.

Good luck with your surgery, and with your Kindle too! (I love mine, so I understand how you feel!)

I would call amazon and maybe ask which one is best for you to buy. I called when I broke mine and they gave me a discount ( a credit) on buying a new one.

I have the basic Kindle (also a K3 as backup).. The ""cloud"" == the archive on your Basic. If you click on one of the books - it automatically downloads..

Call Amazon and ask about downloading them from your 'library'. I have the most basic of the early models and they did it for me.
