You Can Send Texts From Your Computer!

I bought a new HP laptop which included an app or program called PINGER. It is really cool. With it set up- which takes two minutes, you can send texts to 35 countries, free. I am just using it to text my husband. My text goes to his cell and he can read it whenever. We share an IPhone, so when he's out driving, he had it with him and my cellphone is an emergency only phone which can't text. I like this program. If you want it search for PINGER.

i don't know about this service specifically - but the ability to do this has been available for a while now! i used to do it a few years back - there were lots of free sites online then.

So, does it use your existing cell phone number/billing? Or is it strictly a computer function that assigns a phone number to you for free?

I don't text, so I have texting blocked on my phone (mostly to preclude spam texts). But I would consider doing it from the computer, from time to time, if it is a separate entity from my cell phone account. I don't like the plinky typing of a phone or other tiny device, so doing it from an actual keyboard would be appealing.

My niece texts to my macbook, I don't text but I guess I should ask her how she did it, then maybe I can text my friends, I'm the only oddball in my group of friends that does not text.

You can send texts from your computer without downloading software or registering for a service. Just use your email.

To email a text use the email addresses below, but substitute the 10-digit cell phone number where it says "number." Cell phones can sent texts to email addresses too, not just other cell phones.

I tried it too. Actually my DH sent me a text from his computer by email using the Verizon link provided above. I got the text on my Iphone. When I replied to him it went to his cell phone, not his computer (email) that he sent me. Interesting......

My son-in-law and lawyer have that. It drives me crazy because I only want to text them. I don't know what I do, push some buttons and it goes back into texting.

I joke that anyone who knows me should have texting because I'm so long-winded I would think they'd want it rather than talk to me!

I have a Samsung Galaxy, so not sure how the text is set up on iPhone. When I replied to the text my phone received from my email, it was in the same thread that showed the email address, and that's where my texted reply went to.

It's called IMessage and it's been around forever. Texting from a computer has been around for over a decade. Even all email services have it, Google Voice, Outlook, Comcast... welcome to ten years ago...glad you finally made it.

Macs running Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8), or Mavericks (10.9) can use Messages to text anyone else using a Mac running those operating systems. They can also text iPads, iPhones, and iPods. There is no charge for using Messages since they are sent thru Apple's iCloud service. When I'm on my computer and receive a text from another Apple user, all my iDevices will chime and my computer will also alert me that a message has come in. When on the Mac I prefer to text using it's larger keyboard.

I love using Messages. I just got an iPad almost three months ago..its my first Apple product. My best friend in another state has an iPhone and an iPad. We text all the time with Messages. Like you said its alot easier than texting with a small keyboard. I also can send pics to her that are stored on my iPad through Messages.

I bought this little accessory for my iPad that plugs into the spot that you plug in the charger. It has a small part attached to it that holds an SD card. Now I can download my pics from my camera and computer easily onto the iPad. Love my iPad..thinking of getting an iMac for my next computer. DW
