I bought an HP about a year ago based on recommendations of CNET.com.......the inkjects clogged and I just pitched the darn thing. After 2 months of no printer, I bought an Epson 410 - but it doesn't fax. It just got set up on Sat w/my windows 8 but I haven't printed from it yet. One of the reasons I bought it is that when one of the cartridges is empty, you only have to buy the one - not the full set of 3-4.

Please let me know what models you like and any jamming issues, quick to break down models, etc. I would also like to know about ink costs. I have 8.1. If you have an eight year old printer and you love the brand because yours has lasted, remember that the newer models are not built like the old ones were. I need to scan and fax as well. if your ink dries up before you use it and if you can convert documents to pdf with it, tell me. Thanks.

Look at Canon. I can't provide a specific model number to recommend but you can find reviews at tech sites (Cnet) or Amazon. I've had my Canon (MG5220) for at least 5 years (very light use since I don't need to print much) and it works great.

my last printer was an HP wireless which I wouldn't recommenced, as it continually lost the IP address between my laptop and the printer. I spent hours on researching and fixing. HP should be able to fix this problem by now.

try Cnet or Amazon for reviews, you don;t need to spend alot for a printer now

I just bought a new printer last week and I bought the Epson 310. Why? Because generic ink for it is very cheap at Amazon and very well reviewed. I started out shopping for good, low-priced generic ink and then looked for a printer it fit. You can get four of the black T200XL cartridges and two each of the color cartridges for around $20 for all ten cartridges. That's ten extra-large, well reviewed cartridges (typically averaging four stars or higher) for around $20. That's only $2 a cartridge! Incredible!

I was originally planning on getting the Epson Workforce WF 2530 but the price went up $10 the morning I was getting ready to order and the only real difference is the 310 doesn't include fax capabilities, but I've only faxed one item in the last five years or so, so the faxing was more of a luxury to me. The 310 sells for $59 at Walmart while the WF 2350 was selling for $70 then jumped up to $80. (It's now back down to $70 after I bought the 310.)

I'd also looked at the Canon Pixma MX452 which BJ's had for $50, but three new cartridges (2 black one color) for that at BJ's cost over $60 and there's no well reviewed generic ink available for it.

I've printed out several e-mails, a few cards (Mothers day and birthday,) and a few other things and the print quality has been excellent. It's going through the ink that came with it pretty quickly, but with replacement ink costs as low as they are for this printer, I don't really mind that too badly.

If fax capabilities are big for you then look at the Epson 2530, 2540 or another in that family, but if you stick to a printer that can/will use generic ink, you'll likely save a fortune down the road. You're likely to get warnings that use of generic ink may void your warranty, but having only spent $59 on the printer I'm willing to take my chances.

I will only buy Canon printers and only ones that have the ""individual ink tank system"". Canon has several models and it depends on if you want an All in One of just a printer. I currently am using the MX892 that is a: Print/Scan and Copy model. Very happy with it and I bought it on Black Friday 2013 from Amazon for $69 delivered. It came with the 5 full ink tanks/sample paper and a CD with some programs on it.

Bought a few months ago: a very basic Canon printer/copier/scanner (laser) for < $80. Love it. It's a very basic model with no bells and whistles. It's fine for me because I don't print often. It doesn't fax, but Canon probably has models that do.

I did well with Lexmarks for years but currently I have two Canons in use. Like the others here, I would recommend Canon as a brand.

Canon has a ton of different models from super inexpensive on up. You have multi-function, which both of mine are (one doesn't have fax and one does), wireless - whatever you need.

I've purchased both of mine on Amazon. They frequently have one or another model in the daily Gold Box/Lightening deals.

I have had a canon printer, and really like them. But the last one I bought was skipping text. I know sounds strange, but I noticed it on recipes that I was printing that some of the ingredients weren't there. So brought that one back to wal mart. It only had black & color ink.

As a matter of fact I just bought a Canon mg 5420 from Amazon. It had everything I wanted, wifi, so I can print from my I Pad, along with a laptop. 9600X2400 so the pictures will be very clear. Prints from a memory card. Self opening door. 5 ink cartridges, and front loading paper.

You can view it along with the reviews on Amazon.

Hope it is easy to setup. Wal mart didn't carry that particular model. The more you look the more confused you get. I know I was.

Well good luck with your choice.

Nannycakes

We love Canon. A few months ago we bought a new all in one Canon MG5520 on sale for $80 at Staples. They now have it priced at $150. We will only buy printers with individual ink cartridges. I buy refill cartridges on EBay. Never had any problems with them. I read some printers are now putting a chip or something in their printers so they know if you are not using their name brand cartridges. I will never buy one of those printers.

Pretty steep. Any ink pricing from others is appreciated.

There are a few different models of HP 8600. The ink runs about $19 for color, 700 page yield, and $25 for black with 1000 page yield. Also available are XL extended that for $37 you get 2100 yield in the black. So 3 color and 1 black run under $100.

Check the specs, you can use grey tone only (mostly black) and with 1 model, this is rare you can have depleted cartridges and it will still print.

You usage will determine which is right for you.

Sorry to continue the "ad for Canon" but I've been very pleased with every model (we have several different ones) used in my home and at my business. That means I can change all the ink tank 3 times for $37. It was not Canon ink but ain't no way I am going to pay 10 times more for their ink for the same results. Sure it voids the warranty but when any of my printers quit, which no Canon has at this point, I would buy a new one.

Some brands that still use the 3 colors in 1 cartridge cost more than that for just one of them. The compatible ink tanks print as detailed a photo as the original Canon Ink that came with this 5 tank system with my MX892.
