windows 8.1

Wondering if anyone upgraded to 8.1 from windows 8? Do you like it better? I keep getting asked on the computer to update. My computer is working well and I thought why upgrade to this? Thanks in advance! Anna

I don't have 8. When I bought my new computer, it came with 8.1. I like it. I really like it. I like that I could set it up to run pretty much like Windows 7 (we use 7 at work, so I am familiar with it) with a minimal amount of trouble.

But if you're really happy with 8, there would be no urgent need to upgrade.

FYI, MSFT will support Win 8 until Oct 2015. After that, security updates will end, so you'll need to update to 8.1 then. I'm in rhe same boat....running 8 and like it, in no hurry to update to 8.1

I think the 8.1 is much better. You really need to update because there are security updates included.

Hi I upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 about 6 months ago I happen to like ir no problems at all. We bought a HP laptop TSV back in April and it came with windows 8.1 so I was already use to windows 8.1 don't be afraid of using windows 8.1 good luck.

You may want to consider updating now. When you do move to 8.1, you computer will have to play catch up and download all the updates you missed.

Please check this out from Microsoft....they are not ending support for 8 in 2015. But you will have to upgrade to 8.1 by then.

But in order to get updates for 8.1 you need to upgrade. And in January of 2015, people will be required to update from 8 to 8.1.

To make matters perhaps even more confusing, users who are still on Windows 8, as opposed to Windows 8.1, have until January 2015 before they are required to update their machines.

I did check MSFT site, that's where I got this info: "Microsoft announced that it will stop providing support for Windows 8 by October 18, 2015."

Update because Microsoft is posting many new security fixes for 8.1 and Microsoft will stop supporting I 8 soon. After you update to 8.1, be sure to continue getting all the updates for it. Make sure your printer will be compatible with 8.1.

There's not much difference in 8.1 but it's easier to shut your PC down with it. The tiles/apps all look the same. Still swings in from the right when you're hovering your mouse in that location. That's what I don't like about 8 or 8.1.

If you install Classic Shell that will be very helpful toward that end.

The link I provided is for the download of CS at CNet, so you can read about it. It adds back in a lot of the stuff you are probably used to - like how to find stuff! When I was setting up my husband's new 8.1 computer I learned right away that it was extremely difficult to find much of anything.

Also, you can click on the desktop picture toward the lower left and it takes you to a desktop that looks familiar. Then, adding Classic Shell gives you the start button and all the stuff you are used to seeing. Makes a HUGE difference if you'd rather just continue using a O/S that has some familiarity.

Thanks! I will definitely look into that. I've adapted fairly well but do still grumble fairly often. My colleagues, however, totally avoid the Win 8 machines.

I am constantly updating with the windows 8, when I upgrade to windows 8.1 I will again update I don't think there will be much of a difference with these updates, because I see the same updates over and over again.

Until I got my husband's new laptop set up, I had totally avoided Win8 (my computers all have either Vista or 7), so it was definitely surprising how different it was.

But I knew that, for him, I had to make it as familiar as possible. The only thing that I like, that I was not able to get to 'take' was the Quick Launch bar. I tried a couple of times, using the instructions I had, and it just didn't go right. But the Classic Shell software allows you to have the 'start' button again and the things that it shows, so you can find everything easily.

The laptop I ordered from qvc came with 8, I kept having problems with it (random) . I upgraded to 8.1 and haven't had those problems crop up again yet. I still prefer 7, built a pc last summer and never considered installing 8. I don't like the lay out of 8, it seems more touch screen oriented, also can't have gadgets either.

On another note, banks I work at recently upgraded thier pc's. They previously had XP for OS. Their new pc's were apparently downgraded from 8 to 7.
